Brownlow Medallist Adam Cooney has listed the top four smartest footballers he ever played against, in a chat on SEN on Friday afternoon.

Cooney debuted for the Western Bulldogs in 2004 and retired with Essendon in 2016, playing 250 games across a decorated career.

The midfielder played against some greats of the game, and here are the smartest footballers he came across.

2. Dane Swan

โ€œA pretty laconic sort of guy but used angles pretty well when he ran. He was a smart runner, he had elite speed and pretty good endurance as well. He worked a lot harder than what he makes out, the perception of him, but he could beat a tagger, read the ball off a ruckmanโ€™s hands really well. He looked unfit but got the job done.โ€
