Dal Santo: Roos should consider trading Goldstein

Former St Kilda and North Melbourne star Nick Dal Santo believes the Kangaroos should consider trading ruckman, Todd Goldstein.

Rumours circulated last year that Goldstein may leave the club due to personal issues. While Goldy remained with the club this year, Dal Santo believes the Roos may be willing to part ways with the big man at the end of this season in order to secure GWS midfielder Josh Kelly.

Dal Santo suggested the club will be forced to give up a high quality player to both free up salary cap space and force a trade for Kelly, who has reportedly been offered a nine-year, $9 million deal by the club.

And given the rise of ruckman Braydon Preuss, the Roos may trade 28-year-old Goldstein.

“I do get a bit of a feel…that they want all of these players to come in and they’re fully into Kelly,” Dal Santo said on SEN radio.

“What the number is we’re going to have to wait and see, but they’re going to have to give something up, and Preuss might make it an easy decision at the Kangas.

“It will give them some leverage, it will free up a lot of cap space at the end of the year.

“Yes they’ve got draft picks and all those sort of things, but if they want Kelly or Martin (they may have trade Goldstein).”

Goldstein has played 173 games for the Kangaroos in his career, since making his debut in Round 15, 2008 against Port Adelaide.

While he is considered one of the best ruckman in the game, as he approaches 30, his value to the Roos, who are unlikely to push for a flag within the next few years, is waning.

Goldstein is contracted until the end of 2019.
