Geelong list manager Stephen Wells has revealed that Richmond star Brett Deledio and Carlton's Zach Tuohy both approached the Cats about a possible trade, rather than the other way around.
Both Richmond and Geelong confirmed on Monday that Deledio is interested in a move to the Cats, while the Blues confirmed that Tuohy has requested a trade to Geelong.
Wells told SEN radio on Tuesday morning that Deledio's management approached the club late in the season, while Tuohy also contacted the club about a possible move.
“Both those players, we received an approach through their manager late in the season for us to consider those boys coming to join us at Geelong,” Wells said.
“Of course with players of the quality of those two we have an interest, we’d love them to come and play at Geelong.”
However, Wells admitted that given their heavy off-season recruiting last year, it will be difficult to accommodate both players.
“We’re not going to force anybody out. I think finances (will be the stumbling block),” Wells said.
“We’re very respectful of the salary cap and with the guys we brought in last year and players we have at Geelong previous to that.
“We’re very tight with our salary cap situation and trying to find a way through all that to fit in those two players won’t be easy.
“I guess there is always a way. If we offered up one of our ripper players that we really want to keep that might get the deal done but we’re not going to do that, we don’t want to do that.
“We want to be loyal to players we’ve got as well."
