Melbourne co-captain Jack Viney will not face Collingwood in the Demons' crucial clash with the Pies on Saturday if his foot injury continues to trouble him.
Viney missed Melbourne's 13-point win over Brisbane on Sunday at the MCG after pulling up sore for the Demons' win over St Kilda last week, and was still on crutches in the rooms after Sunday's victory.
"He's a week by week (proposition). We're not going to put a timeframe on Jack. He is improving, which is great," Goodwin told reporters on Monday.
"We'll see how he is mid-week but clearly if he's still sore we certainly won't be putting his foot at risk."
Despite missing rounds 16 and 17 after having foot surgery, the club says Viney's current foot issue is unrelated.
Should the Demons repeat their round 12 efforts and beat Collingwood on Saturday, the club will finish in seventh position and play in their first finals series since 2006.
Melbourne forward Jesse Hogan returned from injury after breaking his collarbone against North Melbourne in round 19, and was one of the best players on the ground, booting a game-high six goals.
Goodwin was pleased with Hogan's efforts, and praised the young forward for overcoming another setback this year.
"It's terrific for Jess. He's had a really difficult year but he's had a fantastic little period of training," Goodwin said.
"Even when he broke his collarbone he was really keen to get back playing and really having an impact for the Melbourne footy club this year.
"Hitting the scoreboard was one thing, but I thought his intent and the way he played was outstanding. It's a reflection of the training that he's been able to put in and his preparation in and around his game was sensational."
