Hawthorn and Carlton have engaged in an exchange of picks, with the Hawks sending its first pick (Pick 14) to the Blues for their future first and second-round selections.
It means that the move for West Coast defender Tom Barrass will need a revamp by the Hawks while the Blues are back in the hunt for Port Adelaide defender Dan Houston.
Carlton received Brisbane's future second-round pick in a pick swap only moments ago, offsetting the loss of their 2025 second-round selection to Hawthorn.
This confirmed pick swap has many layers to it that has ultimately turned the trade period upside down.
For starters, the Eagles were keen on Hawthorn's Pick 14 for Barrass, as well as a future first-round selection, of which the Hawks have (from Carlton).
It means Sam Mitchell and his group's first selection (currently) is 33, while also holding 71 and 77.
All three are unlikely to get a deal for the West Coast premiership defender.
It might also mean that the Eagles miss out on Richmond's Liam Baker, given they don't have a selection between 14-20 to use.
As for for Carlton, who were adamant on holding their first-round pick in this year's draft (Pick 12) to use in next month's National Draft, it could be huge.
It is understood that in the dealings with the Power regarding Houston, a current first-round pick would get clubs at the table, whilst an array of later selections could help sweeten the deal.
Blues list manager Nick Austin was confident that the club could get in another first-round selection and has successfully done so, meaning they could toss up a play for the two-time All-Australian or go to the draft with a very strong hand.
Carlton now holds picks Nos.12, 14, 69, 72 and 73 in this year's draft.
