Retired Richmond star Dustin Martin is reportedly in talks with renewing his AFL career after long speculation that he was heading to Gold Coast.

Martin's decision to hang up the boots made most pundits tip that he wouldn't enter an AFL field to play again, but that seems to have changed.

The suspected move to the Suns has long been linked since Damien Hardwick took the senior coaching role ahead of the 2024 season, whilst a lure to outside the Melbourne bubble would be appealing for someone of Martin's status.

Now, according to theย Herald Sun's Mark Robinson, the Suns and the three-time Norm Smith medallist have engaged in contract talks.

If Martin were to agree to join the expansion club, it would be as a free agent, and at 33 and well in the twilight of his career, he could be at an estimated salary of $500,000-$700,000 according to Robinson, leaving the Tigers with nothing.

Martin's move to a non-dominated AFL state would follow in the footsteps of legends Gary Ablett Jnr and Lance Franklin.

The pair were utilised by both Gold Coast and Sydney, respectively, in roles to promote the game in Queensland and New South Wales.
