Richmond legend Dustin Martin has firmly put to rest the speculation surrounding a potential AFL comeback with the Gold Coast Suns.
In a brief decisive comment at Richmond's Best and Fairest event on Tuesday night, Martin delivered a simple three-word response toย Channel 9 reporter Tom Morris about reuniting with former Tigers coach Damien Hardwick: โHappily retired, brother.โ
The rumours regarding the three-time Norm Smith medalist had swirled for months, particularly after the Suns confirmed discussions with Martin following his retirement at the end of the 2024 season.
While there was initial excitement around a potential move north, including talks with Suns officials, the enthusiasm has since waned. The 33-year-old's comment indicates he is content with his decision to retire after a decorated 15-year career at Richmond, though time will tell.
Gold Coast had until November to decide whether to pursue Martin as a delisted free agent. However, with Martin expressing his satisfaction in retirement and with significant hurdles in place โ such as salary cap restrictions and the Suns' current development phase โ a deal now appears unlikely.
Richmond greats and Martin's close friends, including Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt, had already expressed doubt about a move.
Riewoldt told Fox Footy's AFL 360 on Monday, โI don't think so. It's starting to get less likely. I can't see it happening.โ
Though the notion of a reunion between Martin and Hardwick briefly ignited hopes of another chapter in Martin's career, the superstar seems content with his post-AFL life, enjoying hobbies like golf and spending time overseas.
With his 302-game legacy firmly established, the AFL great seems set on remaining happily retired.
