West Coast draftee Lucca Grego believes his rugby background will give him a "competitive edge" in the AFL.

Grego's background in the rival code stemmed from his father working closely with NRL powerhouse Melbourne Storm as a development coach.

The Victorian was taken with Pick 48 by the Eagles, who was renowned for his defensive appetite, physicality and toughness in the contest.

Grego's proficiency in pressure and tackling originated from his time spent in Queensland, where he played rugby as a junior.

Recruiters quickly noticed his expertise in the defensive aspects of football, whilst his clean hands and dare off half-back were detectable attributes of his.

He played four games for Vic Metro, averaging 13 disposals, 2.5 tackles and 3.3 marks.

“It definitely helps," Grego said of his rugby background.

"The competitive edge, toughness. It helps.

"I have purely focused on Australian Rules, and I love it.

"Dad was a development coach with the u19s Melbourne Storm. That was awesome. To be around that environment with Craig Bellamy and Cameron Smith was great for my professionalism."

The Western Jets product was ecstatic to join West Coast and new coach Andrew McQualter, who impressed him immediately.

"I wanted to come to West Coast, that was our ideal situation," Grego continued.

"Mini (Andrew McQualter) talked about playing with spirit. For each other, for our fans and for our colours. He is really clear, and we want to deliver that.

"He is focusing on the club as a whole; it's one in all in."

"Shoutout to my mum, she taught me to cook. The beaches, I'm big into four-wheel driving. I can't wait to get to the Kimberley too."

Grego has moved in with club legend Jamie Cripps, who will be showing him the ropes and the necessities that must be hit to make it in the big time.

Grego joined the Eagles alongside Bo Allan (Pick 16), Jobe Shanahan (Pick 30), Tom Gross (Pick 46) and Hamish Davis (Pick 65).
