Eagles legend challenges club on “care” factor, suggests players aren’t “hurting”

“Is that a fair assessment?”

West Coast legend Glen Jakovich was ruthless in his assessment of the club's most recent loss to St Kilda.

Under the roof at Marvel Stadium, the Eagles were smashed by 72 points and looked aimless under interim coach Jarrod Schofield.

Speaking to co-captain Oscar Allen, Jakovic was beside himself following multiple individual performances that clearly weren't up to AFL standard.

"Oscar, you say it hurts, and I take that from yourself," Jakovich said on 6PR Perth.

"I've known you from the Academy and I think you are hurting, but I challenge you there.

"I think there's a lot of your teammates that are not hurting and there's a lack of care on their performance and they seem to get away with it week in, week out.

"Is that a fair assessment?"

Allen - who was visibly distressed - agreed with four-time West Coast club champion, saying:

"I think everyone hurts differently, but you're right," the key forward said.

"I feel footy is a game which is completely between the ears and is based around your contest and will to impact the game.

"And if you're unwilling to do that, it clearly shows up.

"And if you really don't want to hurt after a game because you walk off with your mates after having a great win, you're probably doing everything you can in every moment to stop that from happening.

"It's probably a good assessment. It's something we've been talking about a lot internally."

The Eagles failed to get their hands on the ball, while conceding 67 inside 50s to the Saints, which is 18 up on their season average.

They lost the contested possession count (137-108) which indicates effort and willingness at the coalface whilst also not laying a single tackle inside 50, compared to St Kilda's 23.

West Coast, albeit off the bottom of the ladder, have struggled since their last win in Round 10 against Melbourne, suffering losses by an average of 44.
