West Coast powerbrokers are reportedly still on the fence about whether or not the club will part ways with contracted head coach Adam Simpson at season's end.
2023 has been yet another disappointing season for the Lathlain club, with the Eagles mustering just two wins from their 22 outings thus far.
And with the financial powerhouse claiming just the two victories across the course of a disastrous 2022 campaign, the premiership-winning coach's future has been called into question on multiple occasisons, all despite being contracted until the completion of the 2025 season.
As reported by The Age, the Eagles' brass is said to be discussing the notion of paying Simpson out for the 2024 season and severing ties within the next fortnight.
Simpson is said to be aware of this boardroom discourse and is reportedly willing to walk away from his post should it be in the best interests of the club.
Still, each time the 47-year-old has been placed under the microscope, he has dutifully responded that he remains keen and interested in leading the club through the next stage of its on-field rebuild.
Should the Eagles opt to part ways with Simpson, it is set to cost them a pretty penny and may very well see the Eagles slapped with a tax for exceeding the soft cap.
Throughout the course of the 2023 season, the soft cap has been set at $6.95 million, a figure that will grow to $7.2 million ahead of 2024.
Yet, with the league recently aiding Hawthorn in paying out the near-million dollar remainder of four-time premiership coach Alastair Clarkson's contract, there is a precedent for West Coast turning to AFL House for assistance.
Simpson and the Eagles will fly to Melbourne this weekend to do battle with the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium on Sunday afternoon before completing their season at home against Adelaide the following Saturday.
