West Coast veteran Jack Redden has flagged his desire to play on past this year, with a trigger clause in his contract yet to be met with six games left in the season.
Redden, who is currently unsigned for next season, will line up for his 17th game of the year on Sunday afternoon when the Eagles host St Kilda at Optus Stadium.
The 31-year-old is currently in his seventh season with the Perth powerhouse club after moving from Brisbane at the end of 2015, and has given no indication he's considering retirement at season's end.
A recent report fromย Nine News Perthย revealed Redden was nearing a trigger in his current deal that would add another term to his tenure at West Coast after playing all but one game in the royal blue and gold.
Speaking toย SEN, Redden revealed he is yet to reach the trigger target and understands he's no certainty to do so despite the desire to remain at Lathlain Park.
โDefinitely havenโt activated it yet,โ Redden said of his contract clause.
โI want to play, if I get enough games and sort of hit the trigger.
โBut I think regardless of the trigger, if I stay healthy and stay fit thereโs a spot there for me, might not be in the AFL every week, thatโs the direction of the club where weโre going, verging on a rebuild so we want to get games into these youngsters.
โBut if I can play a part in the leadership and sort of mentoring these young kids, Iโll put my hand up.
โItโs a couple of weeks probably away (the trigger).
โBut I havenโt played that [much] the last four years. I donโt know how Iโm doing, Iโm hanging on by a thread, but Iโve managed to tick games over this year.โ
Free agent pair Luke Shuey and Nic Naitanui are believed to be nearing new deals for next season, while veteran sharpshooter Josh Kennedy is reportedly likely to call time on his career at the end of the year.
Defender Jackson Nelson is understood to be on the radar of rival clubs this year, with the Geelong Falcons product yet to recommit beyond this season.
The Eagles also have Shannon Hurn, Jamaine Jones, Willie Rioli, Connor West, Alex Witherden, and Bailey Williams among those unsigned for 2023.
The Eagles will host St Kilda at Optus Stadium at 4:40pm (AEST) on Sunday as they chase their third win of the season.
