Essendon defender Jordan Ridley has suffered yet another soft tissue injury, falling victim to a hamstring strain during the Bombers' pre-season training.

The 26-year-old was limited to just nine games in 2024 as he dealt with a quad concern, marking his first appearance in Round 11. In 2023, Ridley managed just 17 matches at the top flight.

The injury rules Ridley out for Essendon's first pre-season hitout against the Bulldogs on February 15, however it is a minor strain, with Ridley a hot chance to play in the Bombers' Round 1 match against Hawthorn.

Meanwhile, Jye Caldwell and Ben McKay are continuing to increase their training loads, with the midfielder set to resume full training.

Caldwell underwent hip surgery in August and has gradually built his way back up to full fitness. The 24-year-old has begun participating in match simulation and full-contact drills, with selection in the pre-season fixtures on the cards.

McKay is progressing through his individual programming after a pre-Christmas ankle cleanout, aimed to alleviate a lingering injury.

The former Kangaroo has begun running since his return to the club in the New Year, with goals to continue increasing his participation in football-related drills.

A return to full training is expected in the coming weeks.

25-year-old Harry Jones was placed in a precautionary boot after a rolled ankle on Friday's match simulation session at Windy Hill, but is expected to return to full training this week.

Nik Cox is progressing gradually after suffering a concussion prior to the Christmas break, while Alwyn Davey is set to return to running in approximately one month following an arthroscope on a torn meniscus.
