“It’s people in the media who peddle this who sometimes I think maybe take the job for granted, take the game for granted.” 💥

Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd has accused media members, not the general public, for pushing the idea of shorter quarters.

Quarters have been shortened to 16 minutes plus time on for the 2020 season, which does not bother Lloyd but he does not want the change to become permanent.

Previously, Collingwood president Eddie McGuire has previously called for shorter matches and quarters to ensure the game "fits in with people's lifestyles".

“A lot of media people who push that the game should be shorter, I think they watch a lot of footy and sometimes can be tired by the game,” Lloyd spoke on SEN Sportsday.

“What I’m saying is I’ve never heard a fan who loves their club, who goes to watch their club every week go, ‘Gee I’m glad that game was shorter’, or ‘I want the game to be shorter’.

“It’s people in the media who peddle this who sometimes I think maybe take the job for granted, take the game for granted and maybe are tired seeing maybe three games or four games a week.

“Eddie McGuire was one that spoke about that."

“I’d just say to him if any Collingwood member ever rang you up Eddie and said, ‘The game’s going too long, we need shorter Collingwood matches’, I’d be shocked if a Collingwood member rang him and said that."

“That’s what we’ve got to come back to, the members love this game they see their team for two hours a weekend, they don’t want it any shorter so us media people need to understand that and not take this game for granted.”
