Every club’s 2016 trade period rated

We've now come to the end of a busy two-week trade period. One of the most exciting in recent memory with a flurry of late deals as well as some trades that didn't quite get through. Zero Hanger rates how each club fared during the 2016 trade period.

ADELAIDE

Departures: Jarryd Lyons (Gold Coast)

Arrivals: N/A

2016 Picks: 13, 43, 53, 67 & 89

The Crows made quite a big play for Bryce Gibbs but we're not willing to meet Carlton's demands and having lost a quality midfielder in Jarryd Lyons, their driving force will be limited in 2017. Gibbs would of fitted into that midfield perfectly, so its a shame Adelaide had to be so stubborn.

BRISBANE LIONS

ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA - AUGUST 06: Pearce Hanley of the Lions is tackled by Daniel Talia of the Crows during the 2016 AFL Round 20 match between the Adelaide Crows and the Brisbane Lions at Adelaide Oval on August 06, 2016 in Adelaide, Australia. (Photo by James Elsby/AFL Media/Getty Images)

Departures: Pearce Hanley (Gold Coast)

Arrivals: Jack Frost (Collingwood)

2016 Picks: 3, 16, 21, 22, 76 & 78

Out goes a quality running defender and in comes a quality young lock-down defender In Jack Frost. Fagan and co. have done some good work throughout these two weeks and they've scored some decent draft picks along the way. Four picks inside the top 25 with an extra-first rounder for next year means they've accomplished what they've set out to do.

Rating: Good

CARLTON

during the round one AFL match between the Melbourne Demons and the Greater Western Sydney Giants at Melbourne Cricket Ground on March 26, 2016 in Melbourne, Australia.

Departures: Zach Tuohy (Geelong)

Arrivals: Billie Smedts (Geelong), Rhys Palmer (GWS Giants), Caleb Marchbank (GWS Giants), Jarrod Pickett (GWS Giants)

2016 Picks: 5, 25, 48, 63, 66, 70 & 81

Failing to move Gibbs on means they're stuck with a player that wants out for the entire 2017, however, they do get to keep a quality player in their midfielder. The swap for Tuohy and Smedts is interesting. Tuohy is clearly the better player, but the Blues snared a first round pick for the Irishmen. Could be a high-pick or a low-pick depending on where Geelong finish next season. The capture of those three Giants' players is promising, especially Rhys Palmer, who still may have a bit more to offer.

COLLINGWOOD

Departures: Nathan Brown (St Kilda), Jarrod Witts (Gold Coast), Travis Cloke (Western Bulldogs), Jack Frost (Brisbane), Marley Williams (North Melbourne)

Arrivals: Daniel Wells (North Melbourne), Chris Mayne (Fremantle), Will Hoskin-Elliot (GWS Giants), Lynden Dunn (Melbourne)

2016 Picks: 28, 44, 51, 62, 65 & 83

They've traded out a lot of defenders in return for running players with Wells and Hoskin-Elliot, the only question marks I have about those two is that Wells is 31 and Hoskin-Elliot hasn't shown much in five years of AFL football. Chris Mayne and Lynden Dunn are closer to retirement and they've now stacked up a quality young side with ageing players. Finals footy next season is a must or else these moves are failures.

ESSENDON

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - FEBRUARY 17: James Stewart of the Giants looks on during the Greater Western Sydney GIants AFL Intra-Club match at Tom Wills Oval on February 17, 2016 in Sydney, Australia. (Photo by Mark Metcalfe/Getty Images)

Departures: Michael Hibbard (Melbourne)

Arrivals: James Stewart (GWS Giants)

2016 Picks: 1, 20, 29, 41 & 68

A pretty quite trade window for Essendon this season. Losing Hibbard is massive but gaining an underrated player in Stewart is decent business. Gaining pick 29 means they're back in the second round. Understandably, not a lot of players will want to go to Essendon for the time being, so the Bombers need a season or two to build up their image again to make the club an attractive one to come to.

Departures: Chris Mayne (Collingwood)

Arrivals: Cam McCarthy (GWS Giants), Bradley Hill (Hawthorn), Joel Hamling (Western Bulldogs), Shane Kersten (Geelong)

2016 Picks: 7, 35, 40, 71 & 79

With Pavlich gone, they've had to target key forwards and the acquisitions of both McCarthy and Kersten should help fill that hole to some extent. Bradley Hill can offer some excitement and premiership player Joel Hamling is a great addition down back. A good trade period for Fremantle who have addressed their needs and also scored some great picks.

GEELONG

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - MAY 21: Zach Tuohy of the Blues is tackled by Robin Nahas of the Kangaroos during the round nine AFL match between the North Melbourne Kangaroos and the Carlton Blues at Etihad Stadium on May 21, 2016 in Melbourne, Australia. (Photo by Scott Barbour/Getty Images)

Departures: Shane Kersten (Fremantle), Billie Smedts (Carlton), Nathan Vardy (West Coast), Josh Caddy (Richmond)

Arrivals: Zach Tuohy (Carlton), Aaron Black (North Melbourne)

2016 Picks: 24, 38, 42, 64, 72, 74 & 91

Apart from losing Caddy, they've moved on players that weren't in their best 22 and were just taking up cap space. Caddy seems to be the one that's been put on the chopping block out of those second tier midfielders who didn't perform consistently throughout 2016. Tuohy is a welcome addition after the retirement of Enright and Aaron Black is an upgrade on Shane Kersten. Other than that, Geelong were pretty quiet this year compared to last.

GOLD COAST

Departures: Dion Prestia (Richmond), Jaeger O'Meara (Hawthorn)

Arrivals: Pearce Hanley (Brisbane), Jarrod Witts (Collingwood), Jarryd Lyons (Adelaide)

2016 Picks: 4, 6, 8, 10, 73 & 77

Some great work conducted here by the Suns. Losing O'Meara and Prestia does hurt but gaining Hanley, Witts and Lyons is quite good. They've filled the gaps and have four picks inside the top 10 at this years draft as well as three second round picks and a first round pick for the 2017 draft. Kudos to those in charge.

GWS GIANTS

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - AUGUST 30: Brett Deledio of the Tigers celebrates victory during the round 23 AFL match between the Sydney Swans and the Richmond Tigers at ANZ Stadium on August 30, 2014 in Sydney, Australia. (Photo by Mark Kolbe/Getty Images)

Departures: Cam McCarthy (Fremantle), Jack Steele (St Kilda), Paul Ahern (North Melbourne), Pat McKenna (Melbourne), James Stewart (Essendon), Will Hoskin-Elliot (Collingwood), Rhys Palmer (Carlton), Caleb Marchbank (Carlton), Jarrod Pickett (Carlton)

Arrivals: Brett Deledio (Richmond)

2016 Picks: 2, 15, 37, 39, 45, 52, 55, 57, 58, 59 & 60

They've lost some quality, but they've backed that up with draft picks that'll they will use on academy players. Brett Deledio will bring some great experience and their list is still elite despite those who have left. Simple plan, lets see if it works.

HAWTHORN

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - OCTOBER 20: New Hawks recruit Jaeger O'Meara poses for a photograph during a Hawthorn Hawks AFL media opportunity at Waverley Park on October 20, 2016 in Melbourne, Australia. (Photo by Michael Willson/AFL Media/Getty Images)

Departures: Bradley Hill (Fremantle), Sam Mitchell (West Coast), Jordan Lewis (Melbourne)

Arrivals: Tyrone Vickery (Hawthorn), Tom Mitchell (Sydney), Jaeger O'Meara (Gold Coast)

2016 Picks: 88 & 90

Hawthorn have gone with a high risk strategy during this trade period, securing promising talent Jaeger O'Meara but losing both Mitchell and Lewis who both produced very good 2016's. If O'Meara can't get out on the park, then this becomes a massive failure, but if they can, him along with Tom Mitchell could do some damage. They gave up plenty during this trade period and that swap with the Saints could turn out to be an absolute steal for St Kilda if Hawthorn decline in 2017.

MELBOURNE

during the round 20 AFL match between the Melbourne Demons and the Hawthorn Hawks at Melbourne Cricket Ground on August 6, 2016 in Melbourne, Australia.

Departures: Lynden Dunn (Collingwood)

Arrivals: Jordan Lewis (Hawthorn), Michael Hibberd (Essendon), Pat McKenna (GWS Giants)

2016 Picks: 47, 69 & 84

Melbourne will make a huge play for finals next year and they've produced a very good trade period, bolstering up their midfield. Lewis is a great move and Hibberd is a terrific player and both these players make the Demons' midfield go from good to possibly elite. They're out of the draft, but they've definitely improved their list.

NORTH MELBOURNE

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - SEPTEMBER 12: Nathan Hrovat of Footscray handballs during the VFL Semi Final match between the Footscray Bulldogs and the Essendon Bombers on September 12, 2015 in Melbourne, Australia. (Photo by Robert Prezioso/AFL Media/Getty Images)

Departures: Daniel Wells (Collingwood), Aaron Black (Geelong)

Arrivals: Paul Ahern (GWS Giants), Nathan Hrovat (Western Bulldogs), Marley Williams (Collingwood)

2016 Picks: 11, 32, 33, 87 & 92

They probably could of gone a bit harder during the trade period In terms of securing draft picks and it may cost them in the long run. Losing Wells and Black isn't too big of a blow, and getting Nathan Hrovat is a decent move as he is a bit similar to Boomer. They've lost a lot of experience which needed to happen, and their mini-rebuild starts now. It'll be interesting to see how the younger lads cope.

PORT ADELAIDE

Departures: N/A

Arrivals: N/A

2016 Picks: 14, 17, 30, 31 & 85

Very non active on the trade front, but they've gone back into the draft which they needed to do. Their highest pick in the last two drafts was 37 so its good to see they snared four picks before that in this years draft. Time will tell whether it was a mistake or not to not go for players instead of picks.

RICHMOND

Departures: Tyrone Vickery (Hawthorn), Brett Deledio (GWS Giants)

Arrivals: Dion Prestia (Gold Coast), Toby Nankervis (Sydney), Josh Caddy (Geelong)

2016 Picks: 27, 56 & 82

Great work in securing both Presita and Caddy which should free up Martin to play more forward and lighten his workload in the midfield. A future first-round pick to go with that, and its been a pretty successful trade period at Tigerland. Losing Vickery but gaining Nankervis is also some very smart business in my mind.

ST KILDA

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - APRIL 09: Josh Bruce of the Saints tackles Nathan Brown of the Magpies during the round three AFL match between the St Kilda Saints and the Collingwood Magpies at Melbourne Cricket Ground on April 9, 2016 in Melbourne, Australia. (Photo by Michael Dodge/Getty Images)

Departures: N/A

Arrivals: Jack Steele (GWS Giants), Nathan Brown (Collingwood), Koby Stevens (Western Bulldogs)

2016 Picks: 23, 36, 61 & 86

Getting Nathan Brown for free was great work with Sam Fisher slowly coming to the end of his career. He's only 27 and has a decent four or five years left to offer. Their deal with Hawthorn was excellent but it all depends on whether the Hawks rebound next year. They could of gone for another good midfielder which is what they need. Maybe they can pick one up in the draft.

Rating: Good

SYDNEY

Departures: Tom Mitchell (Hawthorn), Toby Nankervis (Richmond)

Arrivals: N/A

2016 Picks: 9, 19, 46, 49 & 93

Their list is already pretty good so not much was needed from this trade period other than draft picks. Losing Mitchell is a big deal but getting picks 9 and 19 is very positive. Question marks may arise over their defence in coming seasons.

WEST COAST

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - SEPTEMBER 16: Sam Mitchell of the Hawks in action ahead of Marcus Bontempelli of the Bulldogs during the 2016 AFL Second Semi Final match between the Hawthorn Hawks and the Western Bulldogs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on September 16, 2016 in Melbourne, Australia. (Photo by Adam Trafford/AFL Media/Getty Images)

Departures: N/A

Arrivals: Sam Mitchell (Hawthorn), Nathan Vardy (Geelong)

2016 Picks: 12, 34 & 54

Not highly active, but getting Mitchell was massive as he is that third midfielder they've been after for so long. Securing Vardy is a tricky one, yes its good cover for Naitanui but he is injury prone himself and couldn't break into the Geelong team this season despite being fit.

Rating: Good

WESTERN BULLDOGS

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - AUGUST 28: Travis Cloke of the Magpies leaves the field after the match during the 2016 AFL Round 23 match between the Hawthorn Hawks and the Collingwood Magpies at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on August 28, 2016 in Melbourne, Australia. (Photo by Adam Trafford/AFL Media/Getty Images)

Departures: Joel Hamling (Fremantle), Nathan Hrovat (North Melbourne), Koby Stevens (St Kilda)

Arrivals: Travis Cloke (Collingwood)

2016 Picks: 18, 26, 50, 75, 80 & 94

Picks 18 and 26 for Hamling is a pretty decent deal for the Dogs for a player who isn't as good as the other Bulldog premiership players. If they can snare a player like Josh Dunkley as they did last year, than this will prove to be very slick work from Beveridge and co. Having the luxury of Travis Cloke could also work in their favour as he isn't necessarily their key forward target with Stringer, Boyd and Crameri all capable of playing that role.
