Port Melbourne spearhead Billy Gowers has claimed the 2024 Jim 'Frosty' Miller Medal thanks to a dominant final weekend of the VFL season.

Gowers entered the last round of the competition tied atop the league's goalkicking leaderboard alongside Carlton's Liam McMahon and Werribee's Hudson Garoni, who both played on Sunday - a day after Gowers and the Borough claimed a win over the Northern Bullants at North Port Oval.

The former Carlton and Western Bulldogs-listed tall booted seven of his side's 13 majors against the Bullants to take a strong lead ahead of the final day of the season, with the big bag adding the seven goals he booted in his previous game against Frankston.

Four second-half goals in Port Melbourne's 27-point win over their fellow standalone rival saw Gowers place one hand on the Frosty Miller Medal, with a sizeable afternoon needed from either McMahon or Garoni to deny Gowers of becoming the first VFL leading goalkicker for the Borough since Jordan Lisle in 2019.

McMahon, who booted seven goals last week to create a tight three-horse race for the award, started his pursuit on the front foot on Sunday against Richmond's reserves with his side's first two goals at Princes Park.

That would be all the former Collingwood attacker could conjure in the nine-point loss, with the 22-year-old still managing a breakout year in the VFL in his second season since departing the Magpies.

His brace over the weekend continued his stellar streak of booting multiple goals in all 16 games this year, tallying 45 for the season to finish second to Gowers.

Garoni had the final chance to add to the enticing season's conclusion when the 'Bees took on Box Hill in the last game of the home and away season, with last year's grand finalists claiming the minor premiership with an 11-point win over the Hawks despite their sharpshooter being held to seven disposals and the one goal for the day.

After finishing third in last year's goalkicking running, Garoni levels his standing of yesteryear with a 44-goal season - five goals more than his tally in 2023.

The 24-year-old has a chance to end the year with the most goals across the competition, with Port Melbourne and Carlton falling short of the top 10 cut-offs.

Werribee will face Geelong in their qualifying final in less than a fortnight, with Garoni a chance to surpass Gowers' total of 50 goals through the coming finals series.

Frankston's Matt Johnson can't be discounted from the same race, with the Dolphins attacker having 41 goals to his name and could benefit from his side taking the Wildcard Round route.

The extra week, when Frankston faces reigning premiers Gold Coast in Queensland, could see Johnson go past Garoni before the VFL reduces to the final eight sides.

A win over the Suns will mean the Dolphins meet with either Southport or Box Hill in the first week of finals proper.
