Former Melbourne utility Jay Lockhart has called time on his football career at the age of 28.

Lockhart ends his time at the elite level after three seasons with VFL club Southport, who he joined after being delisted by the Demons at the end of the 2021 season.

The North Launceston product joined Melbourne as a Supplemental Selection Period addition ahead of the 2019 season, landing at the red and blue alongside Corey Wagner.

Lockhart would make his AFL debut that year against Geelong in Round 2, kicking a goal from six disposals in his maiden match.

He would play a further 11 games for the season for a return of nine goals, averaging close to 13 disposals and over four marks per game.

Lockhart would transition to a defensive role in his second season with the Demons and would play 10 games that year, while 2021 saw him held to the VFL for the entire season while battling injuries.

He landed with Southport shortly after leaving Melbourne and wasn't without AFL interest before signing as a Sharks player ahead of the 2022 season.

Lockhart has played 49 games for the Queensland club, booting 64 goals as a damaging forward asset.

Southport confirmed this week that Lockhart has decided to retire from football.

"With a heavy heart, we announce that Jay Lockhart has decided to retire from the game and will not be re-signing with us next season," a statement read.

"Jay, your hard work, dedication, and leadership have left an incredible mark on our team.
