North Melbourne midfielder Jy Simpkin has put pen to paper on a two-year contract extension which will keep him at Arden Street until 2022.

Simpkin has been rewarded for his strong performances this season, his third at the club since his selection at pick No. 12 in the 2016 NAB AFL Draft.

The 21-year old's current contract doesn't expire until the end of next season, but is set to be an important player in the Kangaroos' future and the club were keen to lock him in.

Simpkin has played 54 games for the Roos and has improved sharply throughout 2019.

After being dropped from the side in round six, the 21-year-old has put together a strong second-half of the season, including two dominant performances in round 15 and 16.

Simpkin accumulated 30 disposals in North Melbourne's 44-point victory over Collingwood, before collecting a career-best 36 disposals and a goal against St Kilda.

Although they are likely to miss finals this season, the future is bright for the Kangaroos with a solid crop of young players coming through alongside Simpkin, including Nick Larkey, Cameron Zurhaar, Bailey Scott and Luke Davies-Uniacke.
