Brisbane has bolstered their depth ahead of the 2025 season by re-signing five players on one and two-year deals.
Promising forward Will McLachlan, who was already under contract for 2025, has extended his commitment to the Lions until the end of the 2026 season. McLachlan, who emerged as a standout in the Coates Talent League, topped the goalkicking charts and showcased his prowess by scoring multiple five-goal games last season.
Lions' recruiting boss, Stephen Conole, praised McLachlan's dynamic skills upon drafting him, noting, โWill is a dynamic player whose speed and finishing skills will be a welcome addition to us.โ
Joining McLachlan in extending their stay is versatile forward Luke Lloyd, a 2023 draftee who has impressed the coaching staff with his strong work ethic and performance.
Lloyd, known for his goal-scoring abilities, particularly shone during his time with the Sandringham Dragons, scoring 21 goals in the past season and even hitting the extraordinary milestone of 19 goals in a single school match.
The Lions have also rewarded mid-season draftee Luke Beecken with a one-year rookie contract extension through to the end of next season. Beecken has made a name for himself as a dashing rebound defender, contributing effectively during his time with Woodville West Torrens in the SANFL.
In addition, both Darcy Craven and Darragh Joyce have been informed they will be offered one-year contracts for 2025, with plans to re-select them through the rookie draft.
Craven, an elusive small forward from East Perth, brings unique scoring capabilities and defensive pressure to the Lions' forward group.
Meanwhile, Joyce, who has experience with both St Kilda and the Lions, adds valuable depth to the key defensive stocks.
Dom Ambrogio, Brisbane's List Manager, expressed satisfaction with the re-signings.
โIt is great that we have been able to reward these five players by offering them contract extensions to remain at the Brisbane Lions," he said.
"Each of these players has shown strong development during their time at the club, and we are excited to see them work hard to continue to build on their game in a bid to push for regular AFL selection in 2025 and beyond.โ
With these contract extensions, the Lions are not only securing their immediate future but also building a foundation that could lead to sustained success in the coming years.
