As Port Adelaide captain Tom Jonas steps away from footy at the end of this season, the Power will be looking for the next man up to fill the departing skipper's shoes.
Since becoming captain in 2019, Jonas has led the side in 94 of his 215 games for the club over his career.
Unfortunately, Jonas hasn't quite been able to take his side to a grand final yet but has lifted the side to be one of the stronger contenders for the flag each season, even making the preliminary final twice as captain and looking at a possible third time this season.
So without him, who takes the reins as captain from 2024?
We've named five potential players that Port Adelaide are likely to consider.
Rozee has been a standout for the Power this season and seems likely to take the role as their next number one man. His ability to get his teammates involved with precision kicks means that under his leadership, team performance would lift significantly.
Rozee was an All-Australian last season, named in the 22under22 twice (2019, 2022) and won Port Adelaide's best and fairest last year amongst other accolades.
Statistically, he has also had a really strong season. His numbers are incredible with 25.7 disposals, 4.9 tackles, and 19 goals this season with a strong ability to be dangerous coming from the middle.
With his efforts around the ball, the proud South Australian could easily be the top candidate for the captaincy role at Port Adelaide.
Butters is another that has turned up the heat for the Power with a career-best season currently in the works. Butters has put the league on notice with his skills, turning Port Adelaide's attack into one of the competition's best with abilities to find anyone on any angle.
Whilst he might not have much to show for accolades, you would expect that to change come the season's end after the performances he has been having throughout the year.
Over this year, Butters has collected 27.4 disposals, 5.0 marks, and 4.4 clearances per game and has the ability to hit the scoreboard that he has done 13 times throughout the season.
With a similar standing to Rozee, both players will be highly in contention to fill Jonas' shoes.
Houston has been 'Mr Consistent' for Port Adelaide over his career. Though his numbers aren't exactly on the same level as Rozee and Butters, his experience sets him apart.
Must clubs try to take focus away by not having their captaincy handed to their best player and whilst Houston is highly admired, Rozee and Butters take the 'star' player role. This allows the best players to do what they do best and not be impacted by the duties the captaincy requires.
Since debuting back in 2017, Houston has played in 143 games and this season has been one of his better ones, averaging 23.1 disposals, 3.4 tackles, and 466.4 metres gained per game.
He has been on the podium for the club's best and fairest in 2019 and 2022 and was in the 22under22 in 2019, but his consistency has been what has made him a reliable figure for the club.
Could Houston's reliability be the reason he is elected captain?
The 2021 Brownlow medallist is an option for Port Adelaide, as he was also captain in 2019. As an onballer, his impact would happen right in the middle of the ground.
With his experience already as captain, current position in the leadership group and All-Australian and club best and fairest honours in 2021, Wines could arguably be the favourite out of all the options on the list.
Whilst his numbers haven't quite been his Brownlow-winning campaign, he still picks up 22.4 disposals, 3.9 clearances, and 3.6 tackles per game.
225 games played is also an eye-opener for Port Adelaide, with Wines the most experienced player on the list of options.
The 2020 All-Australian could see himself as captain as well, having accompanied Jonas and Wines in Port Adelaide's 2023 leadership group. 170 games played since his debut back in 2016, Byrne-Jones has barely missed a beat since being in the senior side.
Not only was he an All-Australian, he was the club's best and fairest in 2020. He has also a good ability to play anywhere on the ground, having come to the club as a defender before slowly transitioning into the medium forward that he is today.
He has had a pretty good season in Alberton where he currently averages 13.3 disposals, 3.1 marks and 3.1 tackles. He has also kicked 16 goals in 2023 so far and will most definitely be a key player in how Port Adelaide performs come finals.
Whilst everyone mentioned appears to have the edge over him, a really good finals campaign might just edge everyone else out. Clubs are always looking for players who perform well in crucial games to lead their side.
