Five trade targets for every AFL team: West Coast Eagles

Some local products and midfield talent could be on the Eagles’ trade wish list in 2024.

West Coast looks set to be a major player in this year's trade and free agency space, while the Eagles also plan to have an aggressive approach for this year's AFL Draft.

Any major list calls will likely wait on the appointment of the club's next senior coach, with the Eagles' search for Adam Simpson's replacement ramping up in recent days.

Amid the hunt, new list manager Matt Clarke will be doing his best wheeling and dealing to try and pry the club's desired trade targets west, with several Western Australians already linked to the Perth club.

Ahead of the next step in West Coast's rebuild, we look at five trade options for the Eagles to consider heading into the off-season.

OTHER TRADE TARGETS: ADELAIDEBRISBANECARLTONCOLLINGWOOD, ESSENDONFREMANTLE, GEELONG, GOLD COAST, GWS, HAWTHORN, MELBOURNE, NORTH MELBOURNE, PORT ADELAIDE, RICHMOND, ST KILDA, SYDNEY

Liam Baker

A name that has been strongly tied to the Eagles across the course of 2024 given his contract at Punt Road is nearing an end.

Baker had strong interest from WA in 2022 but turned his back on a move back to his home state in favour of recommitting to Richmond on a two-year extension.

With that contract now reaching its conclusion, a three-club battle for Baker's signature has broken out, with the Eagles looking to outbid the Tigers and Fremantle for the gun utility's services.

Baker's leadership, grit and versatility would be a welcome addition to the Eagles' squad, while teammate and close friend Jack Graham's flagged move to West Coast could help give the Eagles an edge in their pursuit of the dual premiership Tiger.

Jack Carroll

Any young and promising Western Australian who is off-contract should be in the sights of the Eagles, with Carroll potentially toward the top of the new list manager Matt Clark's list.

The young Blues midfield-forward is without a deal for 2025 and finds himself on the fringes of selection at Princes Park given Carlton's star-studded engine room ensemble.

The Geraldton product has nice glimpses across his 19 AFL appearances in navy blue, however more than half of those have either come as the sub or where Carroll was subbed out of a game.

Carroll has put up good numbers in the VFL this year in a role where he can lead through the middle, averaging 27.4 disposals, 4.7 clearances, 4.9 inside 50s and 3.3 tackles per game.

Riley Garcia

Much like Carroll, Garcia is an unsigned WA product who has shown enough at the top level but can't cement himself a role at selection given his place in the selection pecking order.

The 23-year-old is reportedly in the sights of several rival clubs, including West Coast, who could lure the Swan Districts product back home.

2024 has proven to be a career-best year for Garcia, who has floated between roles in midfield and the front third to offer Luke Beveridge some depth in both areas of the field.

Beveridge flagged defensive areas of Garcia's game was in need of improvement, with the premiership coach dropping his young conduit player after Round 13, with Garcia playing in just one game since - last weekend's win over Sydney, where he collected 16 disposals.

Alex Davies

If midfield depth is an area of interest for the Eagles, Davies could be a cheaper trade option who could have an instant impact from 2025.

The Suns Academy graduate has found it hard to hold onto a role in Damien Hardwick's midfield pack, mostly due to the standing of star quartet Noah Anderson, Touk Miller, Matt Rowell and Sam Flanders.

His return game in Round 18 against Port Adelaide was easily his best for the year, however a three-game suspension for forceful front-on contact has hurt his playing prospects for the final rounds of the season.

Davies had 20 disposals, eight clearances and 12 tackles in the win over the Power to show his value at the top level but remains without a deal for next year and could be better suited elsewhere.

More early draft picks

While there could be multiple players who land at West Coast this off-season from other clubs, the Eagles' priority is likely to focus on acquiring the best young talent they can get access to.

Currently holding one first-round selection for this year's National Draft, the Eagles should be looking to at least double their hand for the opening night of the draft through the trade period.

That may mean they part ways with a senior player or two, with the likes of Tom Barrass, Jake Waterman and Liam Ryan perhaps the names that may be dispensible to a degree who could pocket them a first-round pick.

Barrass may demand a pair of first-round selections on the open market, while many clubs will hold Waterman in high stead given the lack of star key forward talent potentially on offer.

Ryan's value may not be as high as the others, but a club currently contending could be prepared to part with a top-30 selection for the livewire forward.
