Five trade targets for EVERY club: Geelong

Who can Chris Scott entice to come down to The Cattery?

The Cats are notorious for plucking big names, regardless of age, from rival sides in an effort to gain immediate success.

However, in recent years it hasn't exactly paid dividends, with last year's Grand Final loss the closest they've come to the holy grail in a decade.

With this, is it time that Scott and his recruiting staff started to focus on less prominent and more youthful players in an effort to propel them to another flag?

We continue our ‘Five trade targets for every club’ series with Geelong. The idea of these stories is to identify potentially gettable targets who could fill roles, not just link every club to the likes of Marcus Bontempelli and Patrick Cripps.

In no particular order, here are five players which the Cats recruitment team would do well to target and potentially poach.

Sean Darcy

This one is a move that has huge potential to transpire, with the Fremantle ruckman proving to be an excellent asset to Justin Longmuir's side in recent years.

Darcy, standing at 202cm tall, is out-of-contract at the end of 2022 and will have a host of suitors lining up for him should he not re-commit.

The 22-year-old has some great stats for season 2021 and is ranked 6th for total hit-outs. He is also averaging seven hit-outs to advantage per match and runs at 49% for hit-out wins.

The big thing that is linking him to the Cats is the fact that he played for the Geelong Falcons and is very familiar with the area. On top of him already being linked to a Victorian move, should Geelong come knocking, you'd think he'd turn his head.

Matthew Flynn

The Giants big man hasn't had a lot of time in the sun in Western Sydney since he was drafted in 2015. He has only played AFL football seven times, and they've all come this season.

There is no doubt that when Braydon Preuss comes back into the side it might spell the end of his time at the Giants should he fail to make an impression on Leon Cameron.

However, he hasn't been bad in the time that he has had in the team. He's ranked 14th in total hit-outs - not bad at all for a man that's only played seven matches - and is ranked 12th for contested marks per game.

Considering he is off-contract come the end of this year, it'd be wise of Geelong to throw in a bid for him considering he most likely wouldn't cost much and would be looking for his next chapter.

Darcy Tucker

Another Docker that the Cats are by all reports trying to bring to Kardinia Park, Tucker has been solid for Fremantle so far. Playing 84 games for the side since his debut in 2016, he had a bad hamstring injury last year which saw him play only eight games for the season.

So far in 2021 he has played six games, and has done well at his role across half-back and midfield. Tucker averages 3.3 tackles per game, 2.4 clearances as well as 0.9 shots at goal, solid numbers for a man of his position.

Similar to his teammate Darcy, Tucker will be looking for a move back to Victoria, and if Geelong can snag both of them, they will be massive pickups for the club.

Tom De Koning

A real young target for the Cats is young Blue Tom De Koning. 'TDK', as he has become known to Carlton fans, has had a decent start to life at AFL level. His injury at the beginning of the year in the form of a lower-back stress fracture stunted his pre-season, but came back into the side in late-May.

In 2021 he has played in three games, averaging 12.6 hit-outs per game and 0.9 contested marks per game. De Koning is also running at a contested possession rate of 69.1, meaning he is not afraid to get involved in the contest and win the ball off his own hands.

The main draw here is the fact that his brother, Sam, is a Cats player. Re-uniting with his brother under one flag could be a lift for both De Koning brothers, and with the Cats in need of a new ruckman, Tom could be the answer they're seeking.

Marc Pittonet

Another Blues player is first choice ruckman Marc Pittonet. This option would be for if the Cats don't get De Koning and choose to go with someone more established and with more experience.

The 25-year-old has had a decent time at Carlton since his switch from the Hawks at the end of 2019. Pittonet has featured in all 13 games for the Blues this year, and has put up some impressive numbers in his time.

The big man averages 22.2 hit-outs per game - putting him sixth in the league - as well as winning 41.1% of hit-outs and 3.1 clearances per game.

Pittonet is out of contract at the end of this year and, if the Cats table the correct offer for him, could be making the move down the M1 to Geelong.
