Melbourne runner Reece Conca has received a 'please explain' from the AFL after a "quirky" on-field incident during a Round 11 game.
Conca, who has been with the Demons since the end of his AFL career in 2021, was spotted waving his arms and 'guarding space' in the middle of the ground as opponent St Kilda were in possession of the ball during the game on May 26 at the MCG.
A kick was then delivered in Conca's direction before the former Richmond and Fremantle player cleared himself from the action.
According to 7 News' Mitch Cleary, Conca's actions have earned the ire of league headquarters, however the 31-year-old has since been permitted to continue his duties as a runner.
"This is a really quirky one. You can see him guarding space, maybe calling for the footy," Cleary told Talking Footy.
"The AFL has delivered him a please explain. He's forgotten momentarily that he's a runner and not a player.
"He's been able to continue his duties the last couple of weeks. The AFL is red-hot on these, but he is continuing so he has been let off the hook."
Conca is in his third season with Melbourne, having joined the club as a player development manager ahead of the 2022 campaign. He has often been utilised as the club's matchday runner since his appointment.
The Western Australian played 150 AFL games before being delisted by Fremantle, having begun his career with Richmond in 2010.
Conca played 104 games in the yellow and black before returning to his home state via free agency, signing a three-year contract with Fremantle at the end of 2018.
The wingman played 46 games for the Dockers and would not have his contract renewed.
