Ex-AFLW Collingwood player Emma Grant has filed a lawsuit against the Collingwood Football Club after battling ongoing concussion issues.
The origin of the injury comes from January 2020 when Grant suffered a head knock in a practice match.
The 33-year-old's injury first happened on January 18, and Grant's claim is that Collingwood breached their duty of care by allowing her to train on February 5, less than three weeks after the injury occurred.
“The conduct of the defendant was negligent and fell below a reasonable standard of care,” documents filed to the Victorian County Court state.
“As a result of the negligence and/or breach of duty, the plaintiff has suffered injury, loss and damage."
The claims that the ex-AFLW player are filing is damages, cost, interest and lawsuit.
Grant played 20 games for Collingwood between 2017-2020 and kicked two goals for the club, as well as spending a period as the club's vice-captain.
The utility was a key player for the club since their inaugural season in 2017 and even placed fourth in the club's best and fairest in its first year.
In a statement, Collingwood said the club's concern was for “the health and welfare of its players and staff”.
“The matter has not been previously raised with the club but the fact that it is now before the courts means it is not appropriate to make any comment.”
In 2021, The Age reported that Grant had suffered close to 8-10 concussions throughout her career.
Grant has been working as a P.E coach at Bendigo South East College as well as a part-time coach for Richmond AFLW since 2022. She was also a recipient of the 2020 AFL Coaches Association coaching pathway scholarship.
