Former Carlton and GWS forward Liam Sumner has traded local football clubs after signing with Gippsland Football League side Warragul for 2023.

Sumner most recently plied his trade for Southern club St Paul's McKinnon in 2022, however, is now set for a venture to regional Victoria in a switch to the Gulls.

"Welcome Liam Sumner," a club post reads. "Liam started his career with GWS where he was pick 10 in the 2011 draft, Liam finished with GWS in 2015, then picked up by Carlton Football Club for seasons 2016-2017.

"Liam's electric pace and sure hands will add enormous momentum throughout the midfield.

"WFNC is excited and welcomes Liam and partner Sarah to the Gulls Family for season 2023."

The 29-year-old last played AFL in 2017 - his final year at the Blues where he managed a total of 20 appearances across two years with the club.

Sumner was originally drafted to the Giants as the 10th overall selection in the 2011 National Draft and would play 12 games for the club before departing at the end of 2015.

The former Sandringham Dragon joins Warragul as a high-profile recruit for next season, with the club hopeful of improving on their four-win, 13-loss season next year.
