SANFL club North Adelaide have signed former Carlton midfielder Angus Schumacher from East Perth for the 2025 season, becoming the Roosters' first off-season recruit.
Playing 69 games over the past five seasons for the Royals, Schumacher has developed into one of the competition's best midfielders, earning selection in three state games for Western Australia and winning the Simpson Medal as WA's best on ground in the 2023 clash with SA.
A member of this year's grand final side that lost to Peel Thunder, Schumacher averaged 25 disposals and four marks per game for the Royals, demonstrating his precise kicking skills and attacking flair.
His signing is a huge boost for the Roosters, who have lost key midfielders Campbell Combe and Sam Mayes to retirement over the off-season along with Sam McInerney.
Schumacher expressed his keenness to contribute to the Roosters next year.
“I am super excited about joining North Adelaide for season 2025. A competitive list, combined with the professionalism of the club, has me extremely buoyant about what we can achieve on the field in season 2025,” Schumacher said in a club statement.
“I hope with my skillset, leadership and experience I can play a big role in achieving our club-wide goals and bring another premiership cup back to Prospect Oval.”
North Adelaide coach Jacob Surjan was glowing in his praise for his newest recruit.
“We are thrilled to have Angus at North Adelaide for season 2025. Angus is a premier state league midfielder, representing WAFL state teams against the SANFL team over the last few seasons,” Surjan said.
“At 194cm, Angus has good speed and spread out of stoppage but also gives us great flexibility knowing he can play multiple roles. We welcome Angus, his partner Kameron, and the Schumacher family to the Roosters.”
Schumacher played one AFL game for Carlton after being drafted with Pick 70 in the 2017 National Draft.
The 25-year-old also played 32 games in the VFL across his two-year stint with the Blues before being delisted at the end of the 2019 season.
Originally from Narracorte in South Australia's south east, Schumacher moved to Strathfieldsaye near Bendigo in his junior years and went on to represent the Bendigo Pioneers in the TAC Cup.
He vice-captained the Pioneers and finished third in the team's best and fairest in his draft year while also playing two games for Vic Country during the U18 National Championships.
Standing at 194cm, Schumacher split his time between midfield and half-back as a junior and played predominantly in defence in his stint at Carlton.
Schumacher trained briefly with St Kilda before the 2019 draft in the hope of receiving an AFL lifeline before moving to East Perth after being overlooked by the Saints.
His departure follows the news that fellow Royal teammate Mitch Crowden will return home to South Australia next year to play with Sturt.
