Former North Melbourne and Geelong premiership player Cameron Mooney will join the GWS Giants in an advisory role.
The one-time All-Australian will visit the club throughout this upcoming season to provide coaching to a plethora of key-position players.
Mooney had a storied career in the AFL, playing for 15 years at two clubs. Winning flags with both -- one at the Roos and two at the Cats -- Mooney was a dominant key forward for Geelong throughout his tenure at Kardinia Park.
This new role for Mooney will be his first coaching role since retiring in 2011 after a career in the media.
As part of a GWS club statement, Mooney expressed his delight at joining the club following his first day in the role last Friday.
"Day one has been a lot of fun," Mooney said.
"It's the first time I've been in the facilities, which I love."
Speaking on what he saw on his first day, Mooney named a couple of players in particular that he was impressed by; veteran Jesse Hogan and forward Callum Brown.
"Jesse [Hogan] is looking really fit and strong, he rag-dolled me a couple of times, to be honest," said the former Cat.
"And 'Browny' [Callum Brown] is looking fantastic, he's really strong.
"I know he's still learning the game, being an Irish kid, but his ability to throw me out of the way, his strength, his body and his timing, I was extremely impressed with what he did today."
Jason McCartney, the Giants' Executive General Manager of Football was ecstatic in the hiring of Mooney.
"Cam brings a wealth of knowledge after 15 years playing at the top level and we are excited about the wisdom he can pass on to our players, particularly our key position forwards, as well as our rucks," McCartney said.
"He knows what it takes to be successful at this level, having won three premierships in his playing days, and it's great to be able to add someone of his calibre to our environment."
Additionally, former Richmond analyst Jack Harvey has been signed by the Giants, along with strength and conditioning coach Andrew Rondinelli. The pair will be the new Opposition and Player Analyst and Senior Physical Performance Coach, respectively.
Harvey spent 10 years at the Tigers and was present for all three of the Tigers' recent premierships, while Rondinelli has worked in three different sports; the NRL, A-League and AFL with Port Adelaide.
The Giants will be looking to go one step further in 2024 after falling short against eventual premiers Collingwood on preliminary final weekend.
