Former AFL player Majak Daw has joined the Lara Football Netball Club in the Geelong Football Netball League (GFNL), marking a new chapter in his post-AFL career.
The Sudanese-born Australian, who made history as the first Sudanese player in the AFL, brings his wealth of experience from North Melbourne and Melbourne to one of regional Victoria's most competitive leagues.
Daw, 33, played 54 AFL games across his career at North Melbourne, best known for his athleticism and versatility, clunking the 2016 mark-of-the-year against Collingwood.
After overcoming significant personal and professional challenges, including serious injuries and off-field struggles, he retired from the AFL in 2022.
Now, he is set to bolster Lara's playing ranks as they aim for success in the GFNL.
Lara Football Netball Club expressed their excitement at Daw's arrival in a Facebook post:
"We would like welcome Majak Daw to the Lara Football Netball Club."
"Maj is an exciting addition to the playing group."
"As we know Majak was a terrific player at AFL level and we can't wait for him to run out in the hoops."
Daw's move to Lara aligns with a growing trend of former AFL players joining regional leagues, enhancing the standard of local competitions. His experience and leadership should have a positive impact on the club and on local football out of Victoria's West.
The GFNL continues thrive as one of the strongest regional football leagues in Victoria, and Daw's presence is sure to draw attention and support for the Club in 2025 and onwards.
