Former Geelong midfielder Shaun Higgins will reportedly return to Kardinia Park in 2024 through a matchday role with the Cats.

Higgins, who called time on his career at the end of the 2022 season after stints with the Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne and Geelong, spent 17 seasons in the AFL before hanging up the boots.

The Newtown and Chilwell junior was drafted to the Dogs in 2005 and would play a career-high 129 games in the blue, white and red before seeking a move to the Kangaroos.

Higgins won two Syd Barker Medals and an All-Australian selection during his six seasons at Arden Street before returning to his native area of Geelong following the Cats' 2020 grand final finish.

The silky midfielder battled with injury and form to play just 23 games in the hoops, calling time on his career prior to missing out on the club's premiership win in 2023.

After a year away from the competition, Higgins is now tipped to make his return with Geelong in an off-field matchday role under coach Chris Scott.

According to 9 News Melbourne, Higgins will be positioned on the interchange and help with the Cats' game operations for the season ahead.

Higgins will become the latest ex-Cat to return to the club, with the likes of James Rahilly and Steven King landing assistant coaching roles under the new-look leadership of football boss and triple premiership player Andrew Mackie.

Geelong's 2024 campaign will commence with a home meeting against St Kilda on Saturday, March 16 at GMHBA Stadium.
