Fremantle forward Cam McCarthy has quit the club immediately, as first reported by The Age's Sam McClure.
It comes after the 25-year old was told he won't be offered a new contract for 2021.
The Dockers confirmed his departure in a statement released on the club website.
“The club, Cam and his management have mutually agreed that Cam be released from his AFL playing contract for 2020,” Dockers general manager of football Peter Bell said in a statement.
“We have been in discussions with Cam and his management about his future at Fremantle.
“We believed it was only fair to advise Cam as soon as possible that it was unlikely that he would have his contract extended beyond the end of the 2020 season.
“On that basis, Cam and his management discussed the situation with his family, and subsequently informed the club that he would like to seek an early release from his contract, which was mutually agreed to by all parties.”
According to AFL Media, McCarthy is now looking to play for WAFL club South Fremantle.
“He is a South boy who has already expressed a desire to come home, whether it is this year......we will have to just wait and see,” South Fremantle president Peter Christie told AFL Media.
“South Fremantle will be doing everything we can to assist Cam and welcome him home, be it 2020 or 2021 to play.
“If he can’t play this year, we will certainly get him involved in the club.”
McCarthy was diagnosed with epilepsy earlier in the year after collapsing at training, although it was not expected to hamper his season.
He has made just one senior appearance for Fremantle this year during Round 1.
The former pick 14 was traded from GWS to Fremantle at the end of 2016 and has played a total of 70 AFL games.
“Cam is very popular with our members and supporters, and on behalf of everyone at the club, we thank him for the contribution he made during his four seasons at Fremantle.
“We also wish Cam all the very best for his future endeavours and the next stage of his career.”
