GWS will await scan results for veteran defender Phil Davis following an incident at training on Friday.
Davis, who was not named in Adam Kingsley's side to face Adelaide this weekend, would've been hoping for a clean bill of health in 2023 after being limited to just five games last year.
Knee and hamstring injuries have kept the 32-year-old to just 26 games in three seasons, with a fresh ankle concern potentially delaying his return to the field.
An incident at training this week saw Davis awkwardly land on his ankle and require medical assistance, with the veteran defender sent for scans.
In line to face Sydney's reserves for a VFL practice match, Davis is now expected to be sidelined for this weekend's action due to the ankle concern.
Speaking to media after the training session, Giants midfielder Josh Kelly said the club is hopeful the setback is minor.
"It's a bit too early but fingers crossed it's just a rolled ankle," Kelly said. "You never really know, so we'll see.
"He's a special part of the group. He's been making his way back through the VFL and hopefully he'll be up for selection sooner rather than later."
The Giants are already without small forward Toby Bedford (hamstring) for the opening rounds of the 2023 season, while rookie pair Darcy Jones (quad) and Nick Madden (foot) also face multiple weeks on the sidelines.
GWS did confirm on Friday evening that forward Brent Daniels will lace up the boots for his first AFL games in 590 days on Sunday, returning from his own battle with injuries.
Daniels was named alongside Nick Haynes, Harry Perryman and James Peatling on Kingsley's interchange.
The Giants will confirm their tactical sub one hour before Sunday's bounce at GIANTS Stadium, with the match scheduled for 1:10pm.
