Former Melbourne skipper Garry Lyon has laughed at Sam Weideman reportedly requesting $650,000 per year.

According to the Herald Sun's Sam Edmund, the 21-year-old's management surprised Melbourne with the proposal of the potential new deal, with the Demons forward to fall out of contact at the end of the 2019 season.

And Lyon was bemused at the reported proposal.

“$650,000 per year? Turn it up,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“He’s a super talent and those boys of that size have got a head start on some of the other players, but he’s a long way off.

“Brody Mihocek is ahead of Sam Weideman as a football and he’d be on $210,000.

“You incentivise him with a base of whatever it is and if you play to that level consistently, you’ll earn $700,000.”

Weideman has played 24 games for the Demons since being drafted as the number nine pick in the 2015 National Draft.
