Former Geelong premiership legend Gary Ablett Jnr is auctioning off his 2009 match-worn Cats premiership guernsey to raise money for Compassion Australia.

Bidding starts at just $1, with all proceeds going towards Compassion Australia's Mums and Babies Appeal. The cause is one close to Ablett's heart, as his four-year-old son Levi struggles with a rare degenerative disease that has left him without the ability to speak.

Ablett, who also starred with the Gold Coast Suns after departing Kardinia Park in 2010, claimed his first Brownlow Medal triumph at the end of the 2009 season, as well as his second premiership medallion, whilst also being awarded the AFLCA Player of the Year, notching an All-Australian selection, the Leigh Matthews Trophy, and the Carji Greeves Medal.

Ablett's 2009 outfit has not been washed since it was worn on Grand Final Day almost 14 years ago, with the auction set to attract thousands of bidders Australia-wide.

"I am honoured to be working with Lloyds Auctions in supporting such a worthy cause in auctioning my 2009 AFL Premiership guernsey and pass it down to a new custodian to enjoy," Ablett said in a statement.

"I also look forward to the experiences we have on offer for people to purchase as part of raising funds for Compassion Australia's Mums and Babies appeal."

As part of the auction, there is also the rare opportunity to bid on the experience of having lunch or an exclusive kick-to-kick with Ablett.

Chief Operations Officer for Lloyds Auctions, Lee Hames, expressed his gratitude to be involved in coordinating the cause.

"We were humbled to get the call to support Gary Ablett Jnr on his journey to raise awareness and funds towards Compassion Australia the Mums and Babies Appeal in what is an incredible and memorable donation on his behalf," Hames said in the statement.

"This is arguably the most prized premiership-winning jumper ever to be put up for auction and we expect the phones to be ringing off the hook from footy fans right around the country regardless of the club they follow."

The auction will be finalised at 5:00 PM on Sunday, July 9.
