Geelong coach Chris Scott has revealed the initial impressions on Tom Stewart's knee injury from Saturday night's loss to St Kilda.

Stewart was subbed out of the game after a hard fall into the Marvel Stadium turf, widely suspected to be a potential PCL injury.

The first-quarter injury left Geelong's backline depleted for the majority of the encounter, as the Cats failed a surging comeback by seven points after falling 41 points behind St Kilda during the Saturday night affair.

Scott said post-game that Stewart's injury looked "minor", and that the injury was sustained as he hit the ground.

Scans in the coming days will provide more clarity on his timeline, however.

Scott also commented on Bailey Smith's status, revealing the gun recruit is in line for a return to action in Round 3 after a conservative approach this weekend.

"Their first impression is that it's minor (Stewart's injury)," Scott said.

"Yeah, very close this week (Bailey Smith), if you described our system with these things we give them as long as possible and tend to be conservative unless they're absolutely right.

"The conservative nature of the decision-making suggests that he'll be right for next week.”

Geelong's shock loss positions the club with a 1-1 record after dismantling Fremantle in Round 1. Their rescheduled Opening Round clash comes against Brisbane this weekend, travelling to the Gabba to take on the reigning premiers.
