The Geelong Cats have confirmed Joel Selwood will captain the club for an 11th straight season.

The 33-year-old Selwood is a member of the 300-game club, having played for Geelong since his debut in 2007. The midfielder, rated as one of the best in the game, is a three-time premiership player and a six-time member of the All-Australian team, but is yet to captain his side to a flag.

Selwood is likely to break the record for most AFL or VFL games as captain of a team this season.

Selwood will be supported in the leadership team by two vice-captains. Patrick Dangerfield is the first, continuing in the role for a fifth year, having been elevated to leadership status at the club in 2017.

The 31-year-old has been with the club since his high profile swap from the Adelaide Crows ahead of the 2016 season.

Tom Stewart, who won last year's Carji Medal, has also been elevated to the leadership group and will spend the year as co vice-captain alongside Dangerfield, his first in a leadership role at the club.

The one-club player, who is now 28 years of age, has played more than 100 games for the club and was picked to the All Australian team last year - the third appearance of the defenders career.

Simon Lloyd - the club's general manager of football - said in a statement that the Cats were "lucky" to have three experienced players.

โ€œWe are very fortunate to have a large group of exceptional leaders at the Geelong Football Clubโ€, Lloyd said.

โ€œAnd all three players announced tonight are part of a broader group who will lead us into the 2022 season.

โ€œWe pride ourselves on a whole of club approach to leadership and on nurturing and developing strong leaders right across the club and Joel, Patrick and Tom are a key part of this culture.

โ€œOur club is proud to have these individuals leading on field in 2022.โ€
