Patrick Dangerfield has stepped down from his role as AFLPA president effective immediately.

Announcing his resignation from the position on Tuesday evening, Dangerfield ends a seven-year stint as the AFL Player's Association president and spokesperson after taking up the presidency in 2018 after four previous years on the board since 2014.

The 338-gamer was influential throughout the AFL's COVID crisis, two AFLW Collective Bargaining Agreements and the introduction of player parity on the Board. His overview of the historic combined AFL and AFLW CBA created the first agreement of it's kind since the AFLW's inception.

Dangerfield will remain on the AFLPA board.

Following Dangerfield's decision, the AFLPA Board has elected Collingwood skipper Darcy Moore as the 17th AFLPA President, marking the premiership captain the second Magpie to be given the duty after Luke Ball in 2012-2014.

Moore has captained Collingwood since 2023 and played 175 games for the club.

Dangerfield said Moore would continue to leave AFL players in great hands, and said he was honoured to have held the prestigious role.

โ€œIt's been a great honour to serve the players as their President, and advocate on issues important to them,โ€โ€ฏDangerfieldโ€ฏsaid.

โ€œThere has been a lot of change since beginning in this roleโ€ฏinโ€ฏ2018, and I'm proud of what weโ€ฏโ€“โ€ฏas a playing group, Board and Associationโ€ฏโ€“โ€ฏhave achieved, from steering and supportingโ€ฏtheโ€ฏplayers through COVID, to the growth of AFLW, and our landmark joint CBA.

โ€œI'm thrilled to hand the reins over to Darcy, who is a passionate and respected leader within the AFLPA and the wider industry.

"The players are in safe hands.โ€
