A superstar Cat has reportedly been vetted to join the AFL commission while still undergoing his playing career in the league.
The commission, in what would be an unprecedented development, is thought to be targeting Geelong captain Patrick Dangerfield for a spot on the board.
Outgoing AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan and chairman Richard Goyder have discussed the prospect of 'Danger' joining the commission while still playing a starring role for Chris Scott's Geelong, according to The Age journalist Caroline Wilson on Monday evening.
The one-time premiership player and Brownlow Medal-winning midfielder-forward is understood to be taking the proposal under consideration.
Such a radical direction would go against the grain of tradition, as the AFL commission has never boasted a present player or club employee.
Further, Dangerfield currently holds the position of chairman of the AFL Players' Association, likely meaning he would need to relinquish that position if he were inclined to accept the AFL's remarkable offer.
According to an AFL spokesperson, a process is 'underway' with the commission, however, the prestigious collective is not giving much away.
"There is a process underway with the commission but we don't provide a running commentary," they reportedly stated.
The AFL commission's role, among numerous additional matters, includes deciding on the rules of the game, confidential club finances, as well as contentious player payments. In past years, the commission has ruled on the Essendon drug scandal, the Melbourne tanking issue, and the Adelaide Crows' salary cap mishandling.
Possible complications regarding Dangerfield's potential commission inclusion have reportedly not been discussed at length, as the instrumental Cat weighs up the idea.
Dangerfield also hasn't given any indication of imminent retirement plans.
