Greater Western Sydney have confirmed the retirement of veteran Shane Mumford, who will hang up the boots as a premiership player and best and fairest winner.

Mumford played 216 games in the AFL, first making his debut with Geelong in 2008 before moving to the Swans and then the Giants.

The Bunyip product took on a player-coaching role with the Giants ahead of the 2021 season, where he played 14 games.

Mumford will continue in his coaching role with the club for the 2022 season, speaking on his career after the announcement of his retirement.

“My time on the football field has come to an end for now,” Mumford said.

“I’m incredibly proud of all that I’ve achieved across my career in the game including winning the ultimate, a premiership, in 2012.

“I’m looking forward to remaining at the club and continuing to coach and mentor our promising ruck division.”

A member of Sydney's 2012 Grand Final win, Mumford's renowned size and stature was a key string in his bow, with the 35-year-old also taking out the Kevin Sheedy Medal in his first season as a Giant in 2014.

Mumford first called time on his career in 2017 before eventually making a return to Greater Western Sydney's player list after being appointed as their ruck coach.
