Going, going… gone: Your ultimate AFL trade news and rumours guide

Here’s a full off-season synopsis for the upcoming AFL trade and free agency windows.

Free agency is just days away, while the trade period will kick off next Monday for what has been touted as one of the most chaotic exchange windows the AFL has seen.

Over 50 players have been tied to moves across the course of this year, with some of the league's biggest names floated as potential departures through either free agency or trade levers.

A number of high-profile names have already lodged their requests to find a new club in 2022, with Bulldogs star Josh Dunkley, premiership Eagle Junior Rioli and Brisbane free agent Daniel McStay among those already heading for the exit.

On top of what has been confirmed, the rumour mill continues to spin at a rapid pace this year, with each and every club likely to play a role in the upcoming trade period, whether that be big or small.

With the off-season now upon us, here's your one-stop trade guide for the 2022 trade and free agency window, as well as list profile and draft pick breakdowns.

Adelaide

2023 LOSSES
Luke Brown (retired)
RE-SIGNED
Lachlan Gollant (2024), Elliott Himmelberg (2024), Mitchell Hinge (2024), Patrick Parnell (2024), Josh Rachele (2025), Jake Soligo (2025), Taylor Walker (2023)
OFF CONTRACT 2022
James Borlase, Ben Davis (unrestricted free agent), Billy Frampton, Luke Nankervis, Tariek Newchurch, James Rowe, Brett Turner

Draft hand: 5, 23, 77

Potential gains: Will land Izak Rankine in what will be a stellar coup for the Crows. The Suns are set to demand more than just a first-round pick from Adelaide, with Pick 5 likely on the table. Jack Graham and Caleb Poulter have also been tied to West Lakes, with the latter's contract coming to an end this off-season.

Potential losses: Will lose Billy Frampton to Collingwood in what has been move seen coming for some time. James Rowe is also yet to have his future confirmed beyond this year, and has been linked to the Bulldogs. Both Matt Crouch and Fischer McAsey are contracted, but that hasn't stopped speculation around their futures. McAsey tied with a potential move to Carlton, now suitors for Crouch yet.

Draft hand: 15, 33, 44, 69, 87

Potential losses: Will lose Dan McStay in a move to Collingwood, however, will gain some nice compensation in return. Darcy Gardiner is another free agent but is restricted, while no suitor has been named for the Lions defender. Deven Robertson and Tom Berry have previously been noted to have gained interest from rival clubs.

Carlton

2023 LOSSES
Will Hayes (delisted), Oscar McDonald (delisted), Jack Newnes (delisted), Luke Parks (delisted), Liam Stocker (delisted), Tom Williamson (released)
RE-SIGNED

OFF CONTRACT 2022
Ed Curnow (unrestricted free agent), Will Setterfield

Draft hand: 10, 28, 62, 64, 82

Potential gains: Blake Acres is set to join the Blues in what will be a welcomed addition to their wing stocks. Fischer McAsey has also been tied to Carlton, however, talks on the young Crow returning to Victoria have gone cold in recent weeks.

Potential losses: Will Setterfield joins Ed Curnow as the only Blues still left without a contract for 2023, however, Curnow is said to have recommitted to the club. It leaves Setterfield in limbo across the off-season, with the former Giant a chance to join his third club or get delisted should he not be offered a new deal.

Collingwood

2023 LOSSES
Callum L. Brown (delisted), Tyler Brown (delisted), Isaac Chugg (delisted), Liam McMahon (delisted), Jordan Roughead (retired)
RE-SIGNED
Aiden Begg (2023), Darcy Cameron (2025), Josh Daicos (2024), Charlie Dean (2024), Jamie Elliott (2025), Jack Ginnivan (2024), Ashley Johnson (2023), Finlay Macrae (2024), Brayden Maynard (2025), Beau McCreery (2024), Reef McInnes (2024), Darcy Moore (2028), Nathan Murphy (2024), Isaac Quaynor (2025)
OFF CONTRACT 2022
Trent Bianco, Jordan De Goey (restricted free agent), Oliver Henry, Will Hoskin-Elliott, Will Kelly, Jack Madgen, Caleb Poulter, Tom Wilson

Draft hand: 16, 42, 47, 48, 88

Potential gains: A busy trade and free agency period awaits the Pies, with Daniel McStay, Billy Frampton, Bobby Hill and Brayden Fiorini all seen as likely to land at Olympic Park. Hawks star Tom Mitchell and Power ruckman Sam Hayes have also been tied to Collingwood, however, those moves are seen to be secondary.

Potential losses: Brodie Grundy looks destined to join Melbourne in what has emerged as a shock move in 2022. Free agent Jordan De Goey is yet to confirm his future, with St Kilda believed to be right in the mix for the Pies star. Ollie Henry (Geelong) and Caleb Poulter (Adelaide) are both unsigned for 2023 and have gained interest from rival clubs.

Essendon

2023 LOSSES
Tom Cutler (delisted), Tom Hird (delisted), Michael Hurley (retired), Garrett McDonagh (delisted), Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti (retired), Devon Smith (retired)
RE-SIGNED
Kaine Baldwin (2023), Nikolas Cox (2024), Sam Durham (2024), Matt Guelfi (2024), Dyson Heppell (2023), Nick Hind (2024), Kyle Langford (2026), Jayden Laverde (2025), Nic Martin (2024), Andrew McGrath (2024), Archie Perkins (2024), Andrew Phillips (2023), Zach Reid (2025), James Stewart (2024), Patrick Voss (2023), Tex Wanganeen (2024)
OFF CONTRACT 2022
Cody Brand, Joshua Eyre, Aaron Francis, Brayden Ham, Cian McBride, Jye Menzie, Alec Waterman (unrestricted free agent)

Draft hand: 4, 22, 40, 58, 76

Potential gains: Aren't looking to return to their common spot as a key player this off-season, but have been linked to an array of options. Wantaway Sun Jack Bowes looks to be a great fit for the Bombers, while Giants forward Toby Bedford and young Saint Jack Bytel are also believed to be on the Bombers' radar. Essendon has also been linked to Jordan De Goey but looks to be an unlikely landing spot for the Collingwood free agent.

Potential losses: Aaron Francis and Brayden Ham have both been touted as potential departures at the Bombers. Francis is understood to have toured Port Adelaide's Alberton facilities, however, is no certainty to land with the Power this off-season. Ham has gained reported interest from rival clubs, but no suitor has been named.

Fremantle

2023 LOSSES
Connor Blakely (delisted), David Mundy (retired), Joel Western (delisted)
RE-SIGNED
James Aish (2025), Jye Amiss (2025), Heath Chapman (2027), Travis Colyer (2023), Brennan Cox (2024), Neil Erasmus (2025), Michael Frederick (2026), Matthew Johnson (2025), Nathan O'Driscoll (2024), Alex Pearce (2025), Sam Sturt (2023), Sam Switkowski (2024), Brandon Walker (2024), Michael Walters (2023), Nathan Wilson (2023), Karl Worner (2023), Hayden Young (2027)
OFF CONTRACT 2022
Blake Acres, Bailey Banfield (unrestricted free agent), Mitch Crowden (unrestricted free agent), Sebit Kuek, Griffin Logue

Draft hand: 13, 72, 85

Potential gains: Perhaps the club with the most on their plate this off-season. The Dockers will continue to talk with Melbourne over a trade for Luke Jackson. Fremantle will likely need to give up a pair of early draft picks to land the premiership Demon. The Dockers may also look to take advantage of Gold Coast's looming salary dump, with Josh Corbett and Jeremy Sharp both tied to Cockburn.

Potential losses: Here's where things get really busy for the Dockers. Griffin Logue (North Melbourne), Darcy Tucker (North Melbourne), Blake Acres (Carlton) and Rory Lobb (Western Bulldogs) have all requested moves elsewhere this off-season, each having a likely landing spot. Lobb's request has been denied by the Dockers, however, a move to the Kennel could still come to fruition if Jackson joins. Lloyd Meek and Liam Henry have also been tied to the exit, with the former on the radar of several clubs, including Hawthorn and GWS.

Geelong

2023 LOSSES
Shaun Higgins (retired)
RE-SIGNED
Toby Conway (2025), Oliver Dempsey (2023), Max Holmes (2024), Shannon Neale (2023), Mark O'Connor (2024), Brandan Parfitt (2024)
OFF CONTRACT 2022
Luke Dahlhaus (unrestricted free agent), Francis Evans, Zach Guthrie, Tom Hawkins, Quinton Narkle, Gary Rohan, Joel Selwood (unrestricted free agent), Sam Simpson, Isaac Smith (unrestricted free agent), Nick Stevens, Paul Tsapatolis, Zach Tuohy, Zane Williams

Draft hand: 18, 36, 46, 51, 54, 60, 90

Potential gains: Have their sights on young Magpie Ollie Henry and departing Giant Tanner Bruhn - two local products that will add youth to the premiers' list. Both cost the Cats multiple early picks.

Potential losses: Francis Evans has been linked with a move to Port Adelaide, but it remains to be seen how strong the Power's interest in the fringe Cat is. Esava Ratugolea has been floated as an option for rival clubs, but no suitor has emerged for the versatile Cats tall.

Gold Coast

2023 LOSSES
Matt Conroy (delisted), Jez McLennan (delisted), Patrick Murtagh (delisted), Rhys Nicholls (delisted)
RE-SIGNED
Ben Ainsworth (2024), Mac Andrew (2025), Connor Budarick (2025), Caleb Graham (2026), Elijah Hollands (2024), Ben King (2024), Jack Lukosius (2026), Touk Miller (2027), Ned Moyle (2024), Lachie Weller (2026)
OFF CONTRACT 2022
Chris Burgess, Levi Casboult (unrestricted free agent), Charlie Constable (unrestricted free agent), Josh Corbett, Oskar Faulkead, Darcy MacPherson, Oleg Markov, Hewego Paul Oea, Izak Rankine

Draft hand: 7, 25, 31, 34, 43, 52, 67, 70, 79

Potential gains: Saint Ben Long has announced his intentions to join the Suns this off-season in what might be the only addition for the Carrara club. Bulldogs free agent Jason Johannisen was also linked with a move to the Gold Coast, however Long's desire to also head north could see the Norm Smith medallist remain at the Kennel.

Potential losses: Another wave of talent looks set to depart the Suns this year, with none bigger than gun forward Izak Rankine, who has requested a move to Adelaide. Jack Bowes is flagged to be seeking a new home, with several clubs in the mix for the midfield-defender. Jeremy Sharp and Josh Corbett could make the switch to Western Australia and join the Dockers, while Chris Burgess is also gaining external interest. Fringe midfielder Brayden Fiorini has been strongly linked with a move to Collingwood.

GWS

2023 LOSSES
Jarrod Brander (delisted), Matt de Boer (retired), Zach Sproule (delisted), Jake Stein (delisted)
RE-SIGNED
Ryan Angwin (2024), Kieren Briggs (2024), Callum M Brown (2023), Isaac Cumming (2024), Phil Davis (2023), Josh Fahey (2024), Cameron Fleeton (2023), Cooper Hamilton (2023), Jesse Hogan (2024), Connor Idun (2026), Lachlan Keeffe (2023), Adam Kennedy (2024), Daniel Lloyd (2023), James Peatling (2024), Jacob Wehr (2023)
OFF CONTRACT 2022
Tanner Bruhn, Bobby Hill, Xavier O'Halloran, Will Shaw, Tim Taranto

Draft hand: 3, 21, 39, 57, 59, 75

Potential gains: Facing the reality of losing more star names, with none coming the other way. Fremantle ruckman Lloyd Meek has been linked with the Giants, while young Demon Toby Bedford is also understood to be on their radar. Bedford also has interest from the Bombers and Roos. Could land a Tiger or two in their negotiations for two departing stars.

Potential losses: Will lose duo Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper to Richmond in what is another double blow for GWS. Tanner Bruhn looks set to request a move to Geelong, while Bobby Hill will also depart in a switch to Collingwood.

Hawthorn

2023 LOSSES
Jackson Callow (delisted), Connor Downie (delisted), Daniel Howe (delisted), Ben McEvoy (retired), Tom Phillips (delisted), Liam Shiels (retired)
RE-SIGNED
Luke Breust (2024), Sam Frost (2024), Denver Grainger-Barras (2024), Changkuoth Jiath (2024), Mitchell Lewis (2026), Ned Long (2023), Harry Morrison (2024), Conor Nash (2024), Jack Scrimshaw (2024), James Sicily (2027)
OFF CONTRACT 2022
Tyler Brockman, Jack Gunston (unrestricted free agent), Kyle Hartigan (unrestricted free agent), Emerson Jeka, Seamus Mitchell, Josh Morris, Jack Saunders

Draft hand: 6, 24, 49, 61, 78

Potential gains: Karl Amon will exercise his rights as a free agent and trade Port Adelaide for Hawthorn at no expense for the Hawks. Dockers tall Lloyd Meek has been linked to a Waverley move as he looks for greater opportunities at AFL level.

Potential losses: Brownlow Medal winner Tom Mitchell has also been thrown up as a trade option for rival clubs, with Collingwood seen as the leading suitor, however that move remains somewhat unlikely given the Magpies' other off-season priorities. Veteran Jack Gunston is yet to make a call on his future, with Brisbane understood to be circling.

Melbourne

2023 LOSSES
Mitch Brown (retired), Majak Daw (retired), Fraser Rosman (delisted)
RE-SIGNED
Jake Bowey (2024), Angus Brayshaw (2028), Bayley Fritsch (2026), Bailey Laurie (2024), Judd McVee (2023), Andy Moniz-Wakefield (2023), Clayton Oliver (2030), Deakyn Smith (2023), Joel Smith (2024), Charlie Spargo (2025), Tom Sparrow (2024), Daniel Turner (2024)
OFF CONTRACT 2022
Oskar Baker, Toby Bedford, Michael Hibberd, Jayden Hunt (unrestricted free agent), Luke Jackson, Jake Melksham

Draft hand: 32, 41, 50, 63, 68, 86

Potential gains: Brodie Grundy looks almost certain to join Melbourne from Collingwood to form a lethal ruck duo with premiership skipper Max Gawn. Grundy aside, the Demons look quiet on the trade landscape. Grundy is likely to cost a first-round pick, which Melbourne will receive from Fremantle in negotiations for Luke Jackson.

Potential losses: Jackson has requested a move back home, with Fremantle in the driving seat to land the young Demons tall. Melbourne will gain a wealthy trade package in return for the wantaway ruck-forward. Small forward Toby Bedford has gained interest from a trio of clubs, while Jayden Hunt is reportedly facing an uncertain future. Defender Adam Tomlinson is believed to have undergone a medical with the Western Bulldogs.

North Melbourne

2023 LOSSES
Kyron Hayden (delisted), Tom Lynch (retired), Matthew McGuinness (delisted), Patrick Walker (delisted)
RE-SIGNED
Ben Cunnington (2024), Paul Curtis (2025), Todd Goldstein (2023), Aaron Hall (2023), Flynn Perez (2023), Bailey Scott (2024), Curtis Taylor (2024), Tarryn Thomas (2024), Tristan Xerri (2025), Lachie Young (2023), Cameron Zurhaar (2024)
OFF CONTRACT 2022
Jed Anderson, Atu Bosenavulagi, Kayne Turner (unrestricted free agent), Josh Walker (unrestricted free agent)

Draft hand: 1, 55, 66, 73

Potential gains: Plenty of names have been tied to Arden Street, with the Roos' acquisition of Alastair Clarkson sure to gain some sway. His former student in Brad Hill has been linked to North Melbourne despite being contracted for the next two years. Griffin Logue and Darcy Tucker are expected to make the move from Fremantle, while young Saint Hunter Clark and Demons forward Toby Bedford have been linked with the Roos.

Potential losses: Aren't too many names tied to the exit at North Melbourne after the club was able to stave off rival interest and re-sign Cameron Zurhaar, Todd Goldstein and Bailey Scott. Midfielder Jed Anderson appears a certainty to depart given his lack of a contract.

Port Adelaide

OFF CONTRACT 2022
Karl Amon (unrestricted free agent), Trent Dumont (unrestricted free agent), Martin Frederick, Jed McEntee

Draft hand: 8, 53, 56, 80

Potential gains: Will acquire premiership Eagle Junior Rioli in a move that will bolster their forward line. Cats small forward Francis Evans has also been linked to the Alberton club. Tiger Jack Graham is seen as gettable and of interest to the Power, while off-contract Bomber Aaron Francis is understood to have toured Port's training facilities.

Potential losses: Will lose Karl Amon through free agency, with the winger to join Hawthorn. Port will gain a compensation selection that could land at the back of the first-round. Defender Martin Frederick remains without a deal and on the radar of multiple clubs, while Sam Hayes is expected to find a new home and has been linked to Collingwood.

Richmond

2023 LOSSES
Josh Caddy (retired), Shane Edwards (retired), Kane Lambert (retired), Matthew Parker (released)
RE-SIGNED
Liam Baker (2024), Nathan Broad (2023), Trent Cotchin (2023), Noah Cumberland (2024), Josh Gibcus (2025), Ben Miller (2024), Marlion Pickett (2023), Jack Riewoldt (2023), Daniel Rioli (2027), Maurice Rioli (2024), Jack Ross (2024), Samson Ryan (2024), Jayden Short (2027), Tyler Sonsie (2025)
OFF CONTRACT 2022
Jake Aarts, Mate Colina, Riley Collier-Dawkins, Will Martyn, Bigoa Nyuon (unrestricted free agent), Sydney Stack

Draft hand: 12, 19, 30, 84

Potential gains: Will be an enjoyable off-season at Punt Road, with GWS star duo Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper set to become Tigers and heavily bolster Richmond's engine room. No other names have been tied to the Tigers, who will be giving up a war chest of draft picks to land the wantaway Giants pair.

Potential losses: Jack Graham has been raised as an option for rivals to target given the impending arrivals of Taranto and Hopper. Ruckman Ivan Soldo and young midfielder Riley Collier-Dawkins have been named as potential assets to add to trade talks to please the Giants.

St Kilda

Draft hand: 9, 27, 45, 81

Potential gains: Are among the clubs interested in Sun Jack Bowes, who could be packaged with Pick 7 in what is a mouth-watering offer for any keen suitor. Jordan De Goey is yet to decide his future and looks to be picking between re-signing at the Pies and joining the Saints through free agency.

Potential losses: Ben Long has lodged a request to join Gold Coast and will depart the Saints this off-season. Jack Bytel is unsigned for next season and has garnered interest from Essendon, while contracted pair Hunter Clark and Brad Hill have been tied to North Melbourne.

James Bell, Ryan Clarke, Harry Cunningham (unrestricted free agent), Will Gould, Jake Lloyd (unrestricted free agent), Sam Naismith (unrestricted free agent), Barry O'Connor, Sam Reid (unrestricted free agent), Ben Ronke, Lewis Taylor (unrestricted free agent)

Draft hand: 14, 17, 35, 71, 89

Potential gains: The Swans haven't been tied to many names, if any, this year. They're the only club that currently holds multiple first-round picks and look likely to attack the draft as they look to go a step further in 2023.

Potential losses: Defender Lewis Melican is seen likely to find a new home this off-season after falling back in the club's pecking order after the recruitment and emergence of Paddy McCartin this year. Jake Lloyd, Harry Cunningham, Ryan Clarke and Sam Reid are all currently unsigned for next season, however, are seen likely to recommit.

Draft hand: 2, 20, 26, 38, 74

Western Bulldogs

2023 LOSSES
None
RE-SIGNED
Dominic Bedendo (2023), Bailey Dale (2027), Caleb Daniel (2026), Tim English (2024), Riley Garcia (2024), Mitch Hannan (2023), Buku Khamis (2023), Jack Macrae (2027), Robbie McComb (2023), Toby McLean (2023), Cody Raak (2023), Bailey Smith (2024), Rhylee West (2024)

Louis Butler, Zaine Cordy (unrestricted free agent), Josh Dunkley, Taylor Duryea (unrestricted free agent), Jason Johannisen (unrestricted free agent), Stefan Martin (unrestricted free agent), Charlie Parker, Josh Schache, Mitch Wallis (unrestricted free agent)

Draft hand: 11, 29, 37, 65, 83

Potential gains: The Dogs will add former defender Liam Jones through free agency in a move that will strengthen their rearguard. Demon Adam Tomlinson has reportedly undergone a medical at Whitten Oval, but more substance to that move remains to be seen. Docker Rory Lobb has requested a move in hope of landing at the Kennel, but that has been shut down by Fremantle. The Dogs will continue their attempt to lure Lobb despite the setback.

Potential losses: Star defender Josh Dunkley has requested a move to Brisbane, a deal that will get done one way or another. Free agent Jason Johannisen has been flagged as a target for the Suns, however, could remain a Dog given Gold Coast's interest in Ben Long. Defender Zaine Cordy has been flagged as a potentially gettable option for rivals given his expiring contract.
