Gold Coast speedster Oleg Markov has been ruled out of Saturday's clash against his former side Richmond after the 26-year-old entered into the league's health and safety protocols.

Though only short-term, Markov's absence is another blow to the Suns' defensive unit who have already lost regulars in Connor Budarick, Lachie Weller and Wil Powell to season-ending injuries.

The defender's elite speed will be sorely missed for the Suns as they come up against the fleet-footed Richmond forward line.

Utility Jy Farrar is out of health and safety protocols after missing the clash against the Pies on the weekend, but will need to prove his fitness before being named in the side.

Farrar's versatile skillset could be a boost for the Suns, as he can slot into a defensive role.

Meanwhile, tall utility Jack Lukosius could also be welcomed back in Markov's absence, as he returns from a knee injury that has left him on the sidelines for six weeks.

Lukosius returned last week through the VFL and his ability to play in multiple positions on the ground, including defense, could help shore things up for Stuart Dew's side.

The freshly re-signed Dew said the club can't dwell on absentees, and he is confident the players to come in can help fill multiple roles.

"Sometimes you pick your AFL-standard players, and they can fit multiple positions," Dew told the media.

"That's one thing we have worked at in recent years, is guys can play multiple positions, because injuries happen, and we've got to be ready for it.

"We can't sit there and rock back and forward in the corner about it. We've got to get on with it."

When asked about a potential return for Lukosius, the Suns coach said that the youngster was a "big chance" despite only one week in the VFL side.

"He played in the VFL and in his own words was a little bit rusty," he said.

"He's not far away. It could be this week. If he trains the house down he'll be well in the mix."
