GWS have added highly-rated mentor and former Port Adelaide player Jason Davenport to their coaching ranks for the 2023 season.

The Giants announced Davenport's move to Western Sydney on Tuesday, with the 37-year-old joining the club as their new head of development.

Davenport's venture to the Giants comes after the newly-appointed head of development Robbie Chancellor was let go by the club following an arrest relating to drug possession.

GWS football boss Jason McCartney expressed his delight in adding Davenport to his coaching hierarchy, commending the Victorian's pedigree as an emerging coach.

“We're thrilled to appoint Jason as our new Head of Development,” McCartney said.

“As part of our reviews of the 2022 season, this was a new role that was identified as being critical to the continued development of our football program.

“Jason comes to us with a great resume and a wealth of experience working with the best young talent in the country and his remit will be to focus on the continued development of our players, particularly the first-to-fourth years."

Davenport has previously held a coaching and development role with Carlton, and more recently coached the Oakleigh Chargers in the Victorian Under-18s competition - now known as the Cotes Talent League - along with stints in Vic Metro's program.

Daveport played 28 games in the AFL with Port Adelaide between 2009-2011, booting 29 goals before being delisted.

He had initially begun his career with Geelong, where he won premiership and league best and fairest honours at the VFL level.
