GWS captain Toby Greene has floated an "interesting" initiative that he'd like the AFL to introduce in Gather Round, adding a new layer of entertainment.

Among the action-packed weekend in South Australia that will see all 18 clubs descend unto Adelaide, Greene, who first floated the idea on podcast American Aces, suggested that a relay sprint be introduced ahead of the showpiece Sunday night game.

Likened to the annual Grand Final Sprint, the Giants captain believes it would be perfect culmination to the footy festival, but noted one area of contention among the clubs.

"Logistically, that's where you'll get some pushback from the clubs," he told 7NEWS.com.au.

"But if the players get $50k between them and the clubs get $50k, then that sort of softens the blow for them.

"But yeah, it'd be interesting. If you did get a fair clip for winning it, then I reckon a fair few boys who are quick would end up putting their hands up.

"And it'd be around the ground, so everyone would be really close to the race.

"If you got good buy-in, it would look pretty cool. But I understand the logistics is where it where it becomes hard."

Both the VFL and SANFL are taking a league-wide break because of Gather Round, which will host a marquee clash between the two competitions, leaving the WAFL - Fremantle and West Coast - still playing.

"No one (except the Eagles and Dockers) has twos playing this weekend around Australia, so you've got boys who can do it anyway, if you don't have guys in the ones," Greene said.

"So, yeah, it could definitely happen. You'd just need a bit of a push from the AFL.

"It'd be interesting. It'd be good to watch. Everyone would certainly tune in."

There's no surprise Greene was quick to push this idea into existence, given the cohort of speedsters on the club's list.

Brent Daniels, Darcy Jones and Toby Bedford immediately come to mind for the Giants, while filling a fourth spot could spell difficulty.

Geelong's Max Holmes would likely lead the charge for his club, while Richmond's Hugo Ralphsmith is a known quick-man.
