Young GWS midfielder Darcy Jones has extended his contract with the club, securing his services until the end of 2026.
Jones was sidelined earlier on in the season with an ACL injury, which he sustained in March this year. But his newly signed extension ensures that he will stay at the club for the next three years.
Jones was selected in the 2022 AFL Draft by the Giants in the opening round after an impressive junior career playing for Kalamunda in WA and with Swans District in the WAFL. He had an exciting pre-season before his ACL injury and is yet to play a game in the AFL.
The club's General Manager of Football Jason McCartney touched on how excited the club is for Jones to stay in New South Wales for the coming years.
"We're really excited to know Darcy will be in the orange and charcoal for another two years," he said.
"He's come in with a great attitude and work ethic and the form he showed on the training track across pre-season was super exciting."
Jones is one of the club's latest younger players to re-sign this year, following other first-year teammates Harry Rowston and Max Gruzewski.
"All our draftees have fit in seamlessly at the club with Darcy the third of last year's draft crop to have already extended their contracts with the GIANTS," McCartney said.
"He (Jones) brings speed and goal sense to our side and he's working hard in his rehabilitation and looking forward to the next pre-season."
The Giants midfielder has previously played in the forward line, making him a lethal asset in his WAFL and the AFL Under-18 Championships for Western Australia.
The club has suffered a number of setbacks due to their long list of injuries, inclusive of Jones, however key forward Harry Himmelberg is set to make a return after he sustained a concussion in Round 10 against St Kilda.
GIANTS Head of Medical James Rahme spoke to Giants Media earlier this week, explaining how Himmelberg is progressing through the relevant concussion protocols.
"Harry was diagnosed with concussion in that Saints game and has been gradually progressing through the 12-day protocols since,” he said.
"He still needs to continue to tick off all the requirements but at this stage he's feeling good and we expect him to be available to take on Richmond this weekend.”
Defender Nick Haynes, who also suffered a concussion in the same game, was also set to make a return, however his recovery has been set back due to an infection, which will leave him unavailable for Round 12.
"He (Hayes) developed an infection in a cut, causing him to miss a key training session on Saturday," Rahme said.
"While Nick is feeling better from both the infection and his concussion, he doesn't have enough time to progress through the concussion protocols and take the field this weekend.
"He'll continue to build up his training and at this stage we expect him to be ready to face the Kangaroos next week."
The Giants are set to face off against Richmond at Giants Stadium on Sunday at 1:10pm (AEST).
