Harvey finds new home

The long-serving Magpies assistant has landed in another nest.

Hawthorn have added to their impresssive coaching recruitment drive, with departed Magpies assistant Robert Harvey joining the Hawks for 2022.

The St Kilda great will finalise the Hawks' coaching panel for next season, which will be led by newly-appointed senior coach Sam Mitchell.

Harvey joins Hawthorn after 10 seasons with Collingwood, with his last role at the Holden Centre being interim coach in the wake of Nathan Buckley's departure.

A winner of the AFL's Assistant Coach of the Year Award in 2019, Harvey has amassed a strong CV in his time with the Magpies, also leading the club's midfield before being promoted to senior assistant.

“With Robert Harvey comes a wealth of experience in the football landscape,” Hawks football boss Rob McCartney said on the announcement.

“We believe his coaching style and method really complement the other members of our group, which gives a strong and holistic feel to our coaching squad.

“He has built an impressive coaching resume over the past 13 years, with involvement in a number of high-performing football programs, including the caretaker senior coaching role at Collingwood in 2021.

“While Robert will bring his highly renowned football IQ and technical nous to Hawthorn, we are equally excited about the significant cultural impact he will have as we plan for the future success of our football club.”

Harvey joins the likes of David Hale and Adrian Hickmott to link up at the Hawks alongside Mitchell.

The club have also welcomed the return of club champion Andrew Collins, who has been appointed as head of development, while assistant Chris Newman has extended his stay at Waverley.

Hawthorn finished 14th this season after recording seven wins, 13 losses and two draws.
