Five-time Hawthorn premiership player Dermott Brereton has selected the three most clutch goals in AFL/VFL history.

Speaking on SEN, The Hawks great and Fox Footy analyst named the three best match-winning goals he has seen in the game's history, with two coming in the 1987 season.

3. Ben Dixon v Carlton (2001)

"I think his coach Peter Schwab said once, ‘If ever I had to have somebody kicking for goal after the siren for my life, it was Ben Dixon’," Brereton said.

"He kicked one at the MCG against Carlton."

2. Gary Buckenara v Melbourne (1987)

"That is probably the biggest kick we’ve seen captured for the best prize after the siren ever.

"The drama of poor old Jimmy (Stynes) running through the mark … Bucky (Buckenara) was going to kick a torp because he was that far out.

"When he got the 15-metre penalty it brought him close enough that he could kick a drop punt – and he was lethal from the set shot."

1. Stephen Kernahan v North Melbourne (1987)

"Carlton did super well in the second semi (final), they knocked us over in the wet.

"The reason they had the first week’s break in round one of the finals was because late in the season, either the last game or second last game, the great Stephen Kernahan kicked a goal after the siren.

"We still say that goal beat Hawthorn for the premiership in 1987."
