Hawthorn forward Jack Ginnivan will miss Sunday's trip down to Geelong as he deals with a leg issue.

Ginnivan's chances of missing Round 17 were flagged on Thursday ahead of the Hawks' selection, with the former Magpie still named in Sam Mitchell's side despite the concerns.

The Hawks have now pulled the energetic attacker from their 23-man side to face the Cats as he nurses a minor hairline crack in his leg.

Ginnivan isn't expected to spend an extended period out of action.

"Scans have indicated that Jack has suffered a minor hairline crack in his leg following an incident last Sunday," Hawks doctor Liam West said in a club update.

"Given the fracture is on the minor end of the scale, we are confident Jack will return to play in the coming rounds.

"We will continue to assess his situation and provide further updates in due course."

The Hawks have named defender Seamus Mitchell in Ginnivan's place in Mitchell's 23-man side.

The setback adds to injury concerns for captain James Sicily (shoulder) and Calsher Dear (undisclosed), who have also been ruled out of this weekend's affair.

The Hawks have welcomed the return of spearhead Mitch Lewis after he overcame a knee concern in recent weeks, while veteran Luke Breust has returned after being managed.

Hawthorn faces Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday at 4:35 pm (AEST).
