Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell has been hospitalised overseas after suffering pneumonia.
Mitchell and his family are currently in the United States for Christmas and the New Year, however their plans have taken a turn with the Hawks boss now set for several days in hospital after his health " rapidly deteriorated", according to 7 News.
The 41 -year-old was admitted to the New York University Hospital, with his condition improving.
Hawthorn CEO Ashley Klein said the club is in constant contact with Mitchell's wife Lyndall as they continue to support their coach and his family.
"Importantly, Sam is improving and recovering well," Klein said in a statement.
"The club has been in regular contact with Lyndall, and we will obviously continue to provide support in any way we can."
Expected to spend several further nights in hospital, Mitchell and his family will soon look to return to Australia once he has overcome his battle with pneumonia.
Hawthorn's playing group will return to pre-season training in the coming weeks, with Mitchell expected to be at the helm shortly.
Mitchell has recorded 15 wins and 30 losses during his time in the Hawthorn hot seat, amassing a 16th-placed finish in 2023.
