With the fourth season of Channel Ten's I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! beginning on Sunday night, a handful of contestants have been confirmed, with a three-time premiership star being one of them.
Former North Melbourne and Hawthorn defender Josh Gibson is the AFL player who will travel to South Africa for the show, with Gibson telling the Herald Sun it'll be an experience to remember.
“It is going to really test me and put me outside my comfort zone,” Gibson said.
“People talk about sports men being tough but there is going to be plenty of things on here that will be foreign to me.
"Being put in a camp with people you don’t know and having to forge new relationships and rely on one another is a really exciting challenge and one I am looking forward to.”
Gibson retired at the end of the 2017 season after 225 games in 12 seasons, with the defender a key member of the Hawks' 2013-15 premiership triumphs.
The 33-year-old is the fourth AFL star to enter the jungle, after Barry Hall Dane Swan and Brendon Fevola.
“You never really know until you are in there. As much as you watch at home on TV and I’ve sat at home watching, until you are in that environment and you are forced to deal with those scenarios, we will see if I am a team player or not,” Gibson said.
“I am hoping that that team mentality will kick in and hopefully will give me enough courage to eat what I’ve got to eat or do what I’ve got to do.”
Gibson will be playing for his chosen charity, the RSPCA, with the winner to get $100,000 for their charity.
The defender is excited about the prospect of entering the jungle, even if he's unsure of his own talents.
“At the footy club I was never the most talented player and stuff like that so I think my competitiveness got me along to play as long as I did. I love to compete and at the club I was always wanting to win but this is a different environment. I am hoping that competitiveness kicks in when I’ve got to do things in the jungle.”
