Hawthorn awaits to learn the extent of captain James Sicily's latest shoulder concern after the star defender failed to see out Sunday's 61-point win over West Coast.

A marking contest in the final moments of the third term saw Sicily left hampered and holding his right shoulder, which was suspected to have been dislocated as a result of the aerial collision.

Sicily made his way from the field and entered his team's rooms immediately, with an eventual return to ground level coming ahead of the final quarter.

While not looking hindered by the ailment shortly after, the All-Australian backman did not return to the game as the Hawks held a strong lead over the Eagles.

Speaking after his side's win, coach Sam Mitchell said the club is hopeful Sicily has avoided significant damage to his shoulder, with the team having decided not to risk putting him back in the game given the buffer between the two sides.

"I'm not sure (of the extent). He was telling me he wanted to come back on," the Hawks coach revealed.

"We started him on the bench (for the last quarter). I didn't think the game was over at three-quarter time. If they kicked a quick goal or two we would've put him back out there. After five or six minutes we decided we could afford to leave him off.

"He'll have assessments throughout the week... I haven't had a medical update. He looked a bit uncomfortable but we'll be hopeful."

Sicily dislocated the same shoulder in Round 8 against the Western Bulldogs but did manage to return to the field and play out the match, only to miss the next two games due to the injury.

The 29-year-old will undergo further assessment of his shoulder on Monday as the Hawks brace to potentially be without their captain for this week's meeting with Geelong at Kardinia Park on Saturday.

"It's feeling alright now," Sicily told Fox Footy post-match.

"It was a bit sore at the start, a bit innocuous. I'm not really sure what to make of it yet, we'll deal with that tomorrow."

The Hawks had young pair Jack Ginnivan (toe) and Will Day (head injury assessment) require medical treatment mid-game before the duo were able to return to the field, with Day joining Sicily on the bench for an extended period in the fourth quarter as the travelling side looked to take extra caution.

Forward Calsher Dear suffered a knock to the ribs and would eventually be subbed out of the contest for tactical purposes, replaced by Harry Morrison.

Hawthorn are in line to have spearhead Mitch Lewis back from his extended absence due to a hamstring injury this week after the tall forward spent two weeks playing at VFL level in his return.
