Kangaroos star Shaun Higgins will be hopeful to secure his future with the club prior to this year's trade period.

Higgins, 31, is already signed on to the end of next season with North Melbourne, but wants to keep Arden Street his home under the tenure of newly signed coach Rhyce Shaw.

Clubs currently within the premiership window would be most keen on the two-time North Melbourne best and fairest, pursuing the swift onballers signature via a trade.

The looming question for a potential trade would be how much Higgins is worth. A second-round selection might get a deal done for the veteran, while North may push for a ruck replacement if Goldstein is to walk too.

The Roos could look to put any contract negotiations on hold for the time being, in hope that Higgins can remain fit until the end of the year.

Higgins collected 28 touches, two goals and seven clearances in what was a best-on-ground performance in his side's win over Hawthorn last weekend.

Performances like such may just warrant a new contract in the $500,000 range, but with Higgins turning 32 early next season, he may need to further prove his worth.

A suitor for the Kangaroos ball winner would be Geelong, a side who have previously kept tabs on Higgins, as they'll look to midfield options with the likes of Tim Kelly and Gary Ablett potentially on the outer.
