Fremantle coach Ross Lyon is unsure if star recruit Jesse Hogan will be available for selection this week as he ponders a replacement for the injured Hayden Ballantyne.

Ballantyne injured his hamstring in the Dockers' 82-point demolition of North Melbourne and will not be available for the clash against Gold Coast.

Hogan could be in contention to make his debut for his new club, but Lyon admitted there is the possibility the former Melbourne star will need to play in the WAFL before pulling on the purple guernsey.

"I'm not even sure whether Jesse's available. It will be a medical and a psychologist decision, but he will be training today," Lyon told the media on Wednesday.

"When we get to availability, I'll consider that (WAFL) situation, but certainly I'm not in that space at the minute.

"It was really a high-profile situation last week with Jesse, and certainly from my end I am in the hands of the experts, and it is clearly a medical wellbeing issue.

Hogan will not find it easy to break into the Dockers' lineup as Cam McCarthy (five goals) and Rory Lobb (two goals) excelled as the key talls in the forward line.
